Your donation goes five times as far
Welcome  to the first week of our month-long
greenhouse fundraiser match challenge!

With your help, we will build a greenhouse at the Rio Grande Farm Park. Why donate now? Well, thanks to generous donors, your gift is going FIVE TIMES as far during this campaign.
This week, we are highlighting COVID-19's effect on food chains. The need to transition to a more just and resilient local food system isn't just critical because of COVID-19. Still, the pandemic has amplified the necessity to cultivate these traits in our culture.

This article tells the story of the panic food producers and distributors faced as COVID interrupted huge international food chains. Thinking of how to respond locally with sustainable solutions is at the forefront of many people's minds. The Rio Grande Farm Park has not only the market but also the demand for healthy, local, sustainable food solutions.

Nick Chambers, general manager of the Valley Roots Food Hub, has seen exponential growth in individual customers purchasing food from this local hub.

COVID-19 has exposed the faults in our food chain . While there are approximately 2 million farms in the U.S., only 8% of them currently support their local food systems. The remaining 92% of farmers are market-dependent, but market demands are changing rapidly. Recent closures of restaurants have altered the supply chain, and large amounts of food have been dumped as a result. Additionally, COVID-19 has increased consumer demands for grocery store products.

Our Americorps VISTA Meg made a 'zine (mini-magazine) discussing the interdependence of food systems and community strength. Look out for a video of it on the
San Luis Valley Local Foods Coalition's YouTube page! Subscribe to our channel so you don't miss a new video upload.

The Rio Grande Farm Park is positioned to provide healthy body-building foods to those who need it most while economically supporting the farmers we rely on for sustenance.

But we need a greenhouse to meet our mission year-round.

When our land was initially secured, we were called the Rio Grande Healthy Living Park. Though we have taken on a different name, healthy living is still a part of our ethos. The importance of health is at the forefront of many peoples' minds during this time. When folks have access to healthy food, we can build more resilient bodies to carry us through the world.
Donate to our greenhouse fundraiser, and have your donation matched by 4x*
A h uge shoutout to Adam Mordecai for offering $10,000 to match this effort.

*Donors will be recognized on a special plaque in the greenhouse. Donations over $100 qualify for Enterprise Zone. We will honor donors who give $10,000 on an artfully crafted park bench in the Farm Park.

We thank you for your investment in this project.
