Pediatric hospice is a service that no one ever wants to have to use. No parent wants to imagine that could be in their child's future. Yet, when it's needed, it's truly a blessing to those young patients and their families.
Hospice Savannah's Butterfly Program is the area's only pediatric hospice program, caring for children with terminal or life-limiting illnesses from birth through 18 years old.
Our dedicated and experienced physicians, clinicians, and support staff all have specialized training, equipment, and medications in order to treat our youngest patients with the utmost care and concern - allowing the family to focus on spending time with their child, making memories, and being truly present in the moment with them.
And unlike traditional hospice care for adults, Medicaid has a program called Concurrent Care, which means children are eligible for aggressive treatments and hospice support at the same time.
Hospice Savannah has made the commitment to be there for area children and their families through the most difficult times by providing the best hospice and palliative pediatric services in our region. Although these enhanced services are not reimbursable by insurance, they are the very things that give families peace and joy.
Anyone can make a referral to the Pediatric Program – a parent, guardian, or physician. Our interdisciplinary Butterfly care team is dedicated to providing compassionate, family-centered care. After-hours visits are also available, if needed.
The Butterfly team typically consists of:
- Physicians certified in Hospice and Palliative Care
- Nurses certified in Hospice and Palliative Care
- Social workers, chaplains, pharmacists, nutritionists, and certified nursing assistants, as needed
- Complementary therapists: Story Keeper, Music and Massage therapists, as requested
- Volunteers to assist, as needed
We realize what a difficult and emotional time it can be for families, dealing with a child's illness, but through a combination of active and compassionate therapies we will comfort and support the child, as well as family members and other significant people in the child’s life.
