Recap: 2017 Wisconsin AmeriCorps Opening Ceremony

On October 10th, Serve Wisconsin hosted the 2017 AmeriCorps Opening Ceremony. Over 350 members attended from AmeriCorps State and National Direct, AmeriCorps VISTA and Tribal AmeriCorps. The day commenced with a World Café where members discussed topics such as inclusivity in service and living on a stipend. The World Café activity was followed by a parade to the Wisconsin State Capitol and the Swearing In Ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda led by Representative Jonathan Brostoff, a Public Allies alumnus. The day concluded with an inspiring talk by Deanna Singh, Chief Change Agent and Founder of Flying Elephant and author of two children's books I Am a Boy of Color and I Am a Girl of Color. Thank you to all of the wonderful AmeriCorps program staff and AmeriCorps members who made this day possible!
The Opening Ceremony was featured on NBC 15. To view the segment that was aired on television click on the button below.

Member Reflection: Ellen Wilson,
AmeriCorps Member with Easter Seals Wisconsin

I came to camp thinking that I knew what my summer was going to be like. Growing up I attended a camp for people with disabilities in Pennsylvania because I have cerebral palsy. I loved camp more than the universe. One of my favorite things about camp was building relationships with counselors and programmers with disabilities. They were my role models. They taught me to be proud of who I am and to never give up. I wanted to give that to someone else.

Despite the fact that I had been previously exposed to the diverse range of emotional and physical needs of people with disabilities, I wasn't prepared for what it meant to actually fulfill those needs.
