Dear Monterey Community,
It has been over a month since Monterey Public Library closed its doors to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. So much has changed. We are all learning new ways of living and being.
Perhaps you've now learned how to access e-books on your device, or attended a virtual program. There are silver linings to be found. A participant shared after Thursday's virtual yoga class, "Courage is embracing the unknown." We are all being courageous as we continue to walk into the unknown with trust that together we will make it through and emerge stronger.
It is deeply sad and shocking to see the global cases rise and the increased loss of jobs and stability. These are not just numbers, they are our colleagues, friends, and loved ones. As you may have heard, the City of Monterey faces devastating revenue losses. At this coming Tuesday's City Council meeting, Council will consider a proposal to reduce 106 city positions, 83 of which are currently filled. The proposal would leave 3 Library staff members, and no Museums staff, to serve you for the foreseeable future. You can view the agenda packet here:
Monterey City Council Meeting
, and watch the meeting on the City's YouTube Channel at
https://www.youtube.com/cityofmonterey
.
What does this mean for you and your community's Library? The details are still uncertain.
Know that the information and referral line will be staffed, our online presence will remain, and the Library Board of Trustees and I will work on a plan to gradually reopen.
We will be here for you even in a reduced capacity.
Next week is National Library Week. Despite physical closures due to shelter-in-place orders, libraries across the country are demonstrating their resilience by continuing to serve their communities in new and creative ways.
During this poignant time, we must remind one another that together we will make it through today’s challenges, and we will emerge stronger. We are profoundly grateful to each of you who has helped to flatten the curve by staying home, and to our front-line employees and first-responders. Take good care of yourselves, and one another.
