Bobcat Week Events
Join TOKI and the Kiawah Conservancy for a week focused on our beloved bobcats!

Tuesday, October 11, 3 pm: Hope for Kiawah’s Bobcats

Join the Kiawah Conservancy and Town of Kiawah Island as we kick off Kiawah Island Bobcat Week with a panel discussion and Q&A on bobcats and our ecosystem, bobcat research on Kiawah Island, the harmful effects of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides, and alternative pest management methods and best practices. This is also a great opportunity to sign or resign the Bobcat Guardian Pledge. A flight demonstration from Birds of Prey will conclude the event. Kiawah Island Town Hall. Registration required.

Wednesday, October 12, 2 pm: Understanding Lynx in the Food Chain

Kiawah Island’s historically healthy bobcat populations began to decline in 2017 due primarily to increased mortality rates caused by second-generation anticoagulant (SGA) poisoning. Numbers declined from a historic population of 30-35 bobcats down to as few as 10. Bobcats serve a critical role in the Kiawah ecosystem by managing populations of rats, mice, and deer on the island. Because of their vital importance to the island, biologists have been researching these animals for more than 20 years. Registration required. Town Biologist Jim Jordan will present historical and current data from the Town’s Bobcat GPS tracking study and discuss the impacts of anticoagulant rodenticides on the Kiawah ecosystem, including positive signs that the island’s bobcat population is recovering thanks to voluntary efforts under the Bobcat Guardian Program. Kiawah Island Town Hall. Registration required.

If you are coming from off-island, please tell security at the gate that you are coming for whatever Bobcat Week event you are attending. Should you need additional assistance with signing up, please contact Katie Warner at katie@kiawahconservancy.org.

Residents that would like to participate in these activities can click here to register.

KIGR Triathlon: NEW DATE & NEW BIKE ROUTE
Kiawah Island Golf Resort Triathlon
New Date: Sunday, October 16, 2022

Important: New Bike route for 2022! Please be prepared for intermittent traffic delays at the intersection of Kiawah Island Parkway, Sea Marsh Drive, and Surf Watch Drive (West Beach) between the hours of 8:45 am – 11:15 am. Click here to view the map of the new bike route.

How to Safely Pass a Cyclist on the Road

1.     Slow Down - Ensure you have enough time to fully access the road and traffic conditions before executing a safe pass. Lower speed also gives you more time to react should conditions change.

2.     Look and Wait for Other Traffic - You’ll need space in the next lane to pass, so look for a safe gap in that traffic and wait as required. Some bicyclists will hug the right edge of the road to stay as far away from other traffic as possible- don’t misinterpret this as an invitation to pass in the same narrow lane.

3.     Change Lanes to Pass - Once you have an adequate gap in traffic in the next lane, move completely into that lane. This will give the bicyclist a safe buffer and the room they need to maneuver to maintain balance and avoid surface hazards.

4.     Do Not Honk at Athletes - If the need does arise to honk your horn to alert a cyclist that you are about to pass, do so at a respectable distance. If you are too close, the noise can cause a cyclist to lose their bearings and create a hazardous situation for both you and the cyclist.
Safety: Deputies and race volunteers will assist with traffic control at all major intersections. Please use extreme caution while driving on the island on race morning, giving bikes and runners the right of way.

Contact us: For further assistance, please contact Kiawah_Triathlon@KiawahResort.com or call 843.768.6001.
