Interview with Malaika Khan
New York Life
AC: Tell us about your business.
MK: I am in the business of helping people protect their families. I help with life insurance, annuities, and other investments. I started in 2020.
AC: Who is your target customer?
MK: College students, people who are between 21-25. It is easy to connect and have that conversation with this age group, they feel comfortable talking to me and I understand their struggles since we are in the same age group. It’s about educating people that planning ahead is much better than waiting until they are older.
AC: What has been the greatest impact of covid-19 on your business?
MK: Time efficiency – having the time and availability to go out and talk to people in person. It’s harder to develop trust via Zoom because we aren’t meeting face to face.
AC: What are one or two actions you have taken to make a difference?
MK: You have to prospect a lot more using Zoom and other computer software to connect to people. Spending a lot more time online, answering emails, and using social media. You really have to be on top of everything to get through to people.
AC: What is one mistake you have made along the way that other people can learn from?
MK: You should learn from your mistakes and other people’s mistakes as well. A lot of people get distracted easily, thinking about different things, so sometimes it’s hard to stay focused. Have a calendar and every night look over your calendar to schedule out your next day. Then in the morning, use your calendar to set a plan for the day. Make sure you schedule breaks throughout. If you have the right tools in place, it will make your day much easier.
AC: What is inspiring to you today?
MK: It is motivating to get out of bed every morning and know that I can help others with anything they need – big or small.
