MONDAY!
"We’re getting very literal for #MugshotMonday today. In 2005, U.S. Marines veteran Ehren Tool (@toolpottery) created the 1.5 Second War Memorial, a looped video depicting his cups being shot at a 1.5 second interval. Each shattered cup represents the combat death of a U.S. soldier. Viewers are meant to memorialize American wars by standing in front of the video for the amount of destroyed cups to equal the combat deaths in any given war. The Grenada invasion equates to 18 seconds. World War II would take five days of continuous viewing. Tool has been quoted as saying that “the only adequate war memorial is peace.”
Join us, Thursday, April 29th at 6pm EST for a conversation with Ehren Tool and special guest Omar Columbus, who is a poet, photographer, and veteran. Scroll down for details." - Garth Johnson, the Everson’s Paul Phillips and Sharon Sullivan Curator of Ceramics

Founded in 1923, the Scholastic Art Awards are the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious educational initiative supporting student achievement in the arts. Every year, students across the country in grades 7-12 are invited to enter original works of art in regional competitions, which are then judged by professional artists, educators, and photographers. The judges award first place (Gold Key), second place (Silver Key), honorable mentions, and special award honorees. Gold Key winners move on to compete at the national level, and a selection of Silver Key winners are typically displayed at the Everson. This year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the exhibition moved online. Click above to view it.

WEDNESDAY!
The Fourth Ceramic National was the first National exhibition to travel extensively. The Museum selected one hundred works from the exhibition shown in Syracuse for inclusion in a traveling exhibition circulated by the College Art Association. It visited the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire; the City Art Museum in St. Louis, Missouri; the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Gallery in Springfield, Massachusetts. All subsequent Nationals traveled to locations around the country after closing at the Syracuse Museum. They were instrumental in cultivating interest in the ceramic arts throughout the U.S. and in establishing the Syracuse Museum as a driving force in the ceramic world. The ancient Andean civilizations of South America were strikingly diverse in their religious beliefs and material cultures, but each developed complex ceramics for both domestic and ritual use. This exhibition features key pieces from the Museum’s collection, including several recent acquisitions from the Nazca, Paracas, Moche, Chimú, and Chavin cultures.

For nearly a decade, Brooklyn-based artist Steffani Jemison has been deeply invested in examining the ways knowledge is constructed and legitimized. This interest stems from a fascination with frameworks of interpretation and narration, as well as critical theory, and vernacular traditions, including street acrobatics, vaudeville, and Black vernacular genealogies of knowledge. She explores these concepts through a practice that encompasses sculpture, video, installation, sound, and fiction writing.
