A MESSAGE FROM REVEREND TINA
He is coming, he is finally actually coming, the newborn son of Love – sent to us not as the powerful one who rules, but as someone who needs our care, even as he somehow -- mysteriously – cares for us.

In preparation for our Christmas Eve service, Pennie Curry and I gathered things we would need from the closet behind the altar in the Grace Church office and then carefully unpacked our beautiful creche. The image above is of the baby Jesus wrapped in my scarf, which I couldn’t help whisking off my neck and then tucking snugly around him, because he seemed too tiny and exposed without it.

This is the power of openly embraced weakness, I believe: It draws us in, and invites us to love and care and comfort and provide for. And this is why it makes sense to me that God chose – and chooses still – to come to us as a vulnerable, new born baby. God is real. And God is Holy. And God will soon be living among us again. AND God calls us to join in the work of loving and healing and clothing and feeding all of the beloved ones who are courageous enough to ask for our help. So how do you plan to share your giftedness this Christmas? And for what do you hope to ask for help?

Come join us on Christmas Eve at 4:00 pm in the Greenhouse at Taft Farms to celebrate the undying power of Love, and it’s return to us afresh this year. Dress warmly, but otherwise come as you are. All are welcome!
An Abundance of Grace at Gideon’s Garden!

We are grateful to be able to announce that the wonderful Annalise Clausen has agreed to stay on at the Garden for another year -- and that she will be joined in June by Joel Jorgensen, a young man who has long dreamed of bringing youth ministry together with farming.

Annalise and Joel will serve as co-directors of Gideon’s Garden for six months (June – December 2022), ensuring a smooth transition and a stable (and doable!) transfer of knowledge, skills and responsibility. Please join us in giving thanks to God for them both, and in holding them in prayer as they plan and prepare.
Annalise Clausen
Joel Jorgensen
Most of you have known Annalise for many years and are well familiar with her path. Joel by contrast is a newcomer among us, so here’s a very brief bio: Originally from Iowa, Joel brings a breadth of farming experience and a depth of youth formation work that he is excited to combine through his work with Gideon’s Garden. He is dedicated to cultivating the inner lives of youth today and hopes to use the gifts of creation to help young people navigate and explore the meaning found in their lives. Joel currently serves with Lawrence House, an Episcopal Service Corps program in South Hadley, and works for St. Andrew's in Longmeadow as their church school teacher and general intern. Joel is discerning a call to Holy Orders and is can't wait to join the people of Grace in June."
GIDEON'S GARDEN
An update from the Gideon's Garden chickens

Our flock of fourteen hens and (two roosters) has produced over 100 dozen eggs this year, which have been shared with friends of the garden.

This past week I cleaned out the coop, reapplied fresh shavings to the enclosures and rearranged their 'furniture'. The chickens respond well to novelty so changed positions on perches in the coop can keep them curious.

Each time manure is removed from the coop, we apply it to the garden. The applied raw manure is safe to transplant into after 6 months of 'cooking'. This amount of time passing ensures harmful bacteria is not present to contaminate crops, and has been digested to a bio-available state.

The two flocks each have opportunities each week to survey the lawn and garden edges for grubs, grass and tender greens. They have also enjoyed kitchen scraps from the home I share with my family. One of the most popular leftovers from the kitchen scraps was children's Mac & Cheese, of course. Cluck, cluck, Merry Christmas to all!

The last EFM
Readout for 2021

EfM held its final meeting for the year. We discussed our readings: an essay on women in wisdom literature, a second essay providing an overview of the Old Testament, “From Tradition to Canon,” and the New Testament Book of Revelation. We reviewed the year of study and wrote the following collect:

We are searching, curious, and grateful.
We come together in awe and wonder at the spread of the loving message of your son and pray that we can embody it in our daily lives.
AMEN
The following members of Christ Trinity Church, Grace Church, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church participated in EFM
this past year. They each read the entirety of either the Old Testament or the New Testament in addition to a variety of other texts and essays. They each entered faithfully and enthusiastically into the theological reflection discussion process, embodying a spirit of curiosity and wonder at the sacred text and its impact on our lives today.
A shout-out with my deepest gratitude to:

John Cheek, New Testament
Fred Clark, Old Testament
Estie Dallett, New Testament
Imelda Mueller, New Testament
Bob Mercurio, New Testament
Lillie Mikesell, New Testament
Nancy Murray, Old Testament
Peter Schuyten, New Testament
Gail Shaw, Old Testament
Sarah Sieber, Old Testament
Liz Wells, New Testament

Third Sunday Supper

John 1:1-18

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth. (John testified to him and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.'") From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made him known.

Our New Prayer Basket

We welcome you to use our new prayer basket.
On Sundays you will find a basket near the welcome table, with slips of paper available for you to write down prayer requests. You can ask for prayers for those who are ill, or in need of healing or encouragement of any kind, prayers for intentions, journeys, or projects, the birth or adoption of children, and prayers of thanksgiving for anything that needs celebrating. In other words, please ask for any prayers that are important to you and those you love. You may identify yourself and those for whom prayers are needed, but names are not necessary or required. These requests will be prayed for by our healing ministers both during the service and during the week for a period of one month. Keep an eye out for the basket!!

WHAT ARE YOU
GRATEFUL FOR?
In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.
