Waste Update

Allowance of two additional garbage bags for collection
  • As of April 20, residents will be allowed to set out a maximum of two extra garbage bags at the curb for pick-up as part of their bi-weekly garbage collection.
  • Garbage bag tags will not be required.
  • If residents have already purchased bag tags, they are advised to hold on to the tags to use after the Region's emergency declaration has ended or until notified.
Temporary suspension of bulky item collection
  • Bulky items that do not fit into garbage bins or bags will not be collected at the curb or accepted at Community Recycling Centres.
  • Bulky items are difficult for a single person to collect and require multiple touch points.
  • As such, this temporary suspension will continue in order to avoid unnecessary manual collection and protect the health of our essential workers.
  • If residents are spring cleaning, we ask them to hold onto these items until the end of the emergency when collection/donation can be facilitated.
Dumping at charitable clothing/textile donation drop-off bins

  • The Region will support Diabetes Canada's with their request for assistance with clean up of excessive dumping at textile collection bins on private property
  • Staff will work closely with local municipalities, property owners, and charitable organizations to see where/how the Region can assist in clean up efforts on private property.
  • Staff will also work with the local municipalities to align our communication messages and to develop signage to discourage illegal dumping and littering.

Waiving drop-off fees at Peel Community Recycling Centres

  • Effective Wednesday April 15, 2020 all drop-off fees for services currently offered to residents and small businesses at Peel's Community Recycling Centres will be waived.
    • This includes waiving fees for material such as garbage, yard waste, renovation and construction waste
    • A start date of April 15 will allow time for staff redeployment and to change traffic management plans to ensure both safe traffic flow and physical distancing
The receipt of tires, electronic waste, reusable goods, white goods (i.e. large appliances) and bulky items will remain suspended at the CRCs.

We're recommending that all residents stay home and only leave the house once a week for essentials like groceries, medicines and medical appointments.
Please visit the  Guidance For Older Adults  for more information.

Please do not dispose used masks, gloves or any personal protection equipment in parking lots, trails or sidewalks.

Those found littering medical gloves, masks or any other personal protective equipment (PPE) can face littering fines starting at $365.00

It is  not only unsanitary, it is putting your community at risk.

  • All litter, particularly masks and gloves as well as dog waste must be disposed of properly using the appropriate waste containers available or by bringing it home.
  • Dumping household waste and garbage is unacceptable and in contravention of the City's Debris and Anti Littering By-law and is actively being enforced.
  • Dumping can be reported online.

COVID-19 Fraud

Please protect yourself and beware of fraud.

As COVID-19 continues to spread globally, watch out for associated scams.  Fraudsters want to profit from consumers' fears, uncertainties and misinformation.  Fraudsters are exploiting the crisis to facilitate fraud and cyber crime.

Please visit the  FRAUD ALERT website with the Government of Canada.

Looking for Ways To Help

If you're looking for other ways to help during this difficult time, please consider:
  • Reaching out to seniors and other vulnerable people in your life, who are most at risk of social isolation.
  • Shopping in a measured way. It's OK to stock up a bit so that you won't have to go to the grocery store as frequently as you usually would. But please make sure that you're not buying more than you will need, as others in our community will need access to these supplies as well.
  • Donate to a Food Bank if you can, to help families that are struggling at this difficult time.
