October Newsletter
Upcoming Volunteer Projects:
This month we are excited to be hosting two large-scale community volunteer opportunities, at Pell Elementary and Miantonomi Park. We hope you'll join us for theses fall weekend projects as we care for two very special tree collections.

Pell Elementary Children’s Arboretum Volunteer Event
Recommended for families; Children must be accompanied

Calling helping hands to assist with caring for young city trees at Pell Elementary! This botanically diverse group of trees were planted in 2017 and are known as the “Children’s Arboretum.” Tree care is a vital activity that will ensure the trees grow healthy and strong to provide shade, beauty, and learning opportunities. Experience is not necessary. Registration is required.

Miantonomi Park Tree Planting Event
Recommended for families; Children must be registered and accompanied

Help the Newport Tree Conservancy reach our goal of planting 100 native trees in Miantonomi Park this October! With 50 trees planted each year in 2020 and 2019, we are working to restore the urban forest canopy for the benefit of people and wildlife. Experience is not necessary. Tools will be provided. Bring your own gloves if possible. Registration is required.

Specimen Tree Deadline Extended
We have just a few trees left for this fall's Specimen Tree Program, and we are extended the deadline for requests to Thursday Oct 14th @5pm. Visit our website via the link below to request your free tree.
Fall Programs with MLKCC
This fall, children participating in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center's After School Academy are learning all about trees!

Over the course of six weeks, young learners will walk around, look at, investigate, draw, and explore the trees in their community. From acorns and autumn colors to looking for next year's leaf buds, NTC is excited to share after school time with MLKCC youth.

Seed Collection Walking Workshop
@Morton Park
Friday Nov 5th, 11am-12pm

Learn from Living Collections Manager Joe Verstandig and staff Horticulturist Kristyn Woodland as they cover a variety of techniques for collecting and storing local seeds.
The heart of fall is the time when the fruit of many trees is fully mature and ready for harvesting. Fall-collected seed is stored over winter and then planted in the springtime. Joe and Kristyn will go over what to look for, harvesting and overwintering techniques, and some useful information to get your seeds to germinate. Please dress appropriately. Feel free to bring something to store collected seeds. Registration is required.

@Ballard Park
Friday Nov 19th, 10-11am

Join staff Environmental Educator Rachel Holbert for an engaging naturalist walk through the forest of Ballard Park. Participants will learn about seasonal changes and the interconnected systems that support the forest from the soil up. Topics will include trees, birds, mushrooms and more.

This will be the final free tree walk for 2021.
Please dress for the weather. Registration is required.
