Faith, Hope, and Love in the COVID Season
Greetings!

As you well know, this is not a normal time. At FHLGM, we are now referring to it as the "COVID Season" to signify that this is not a brief, temporary glitch in our lives. Rather, it's an ongoing, indefinite period that requires thoughtful, creative, and earnest ministries that match both the needs and the new opportunities of the global church in this time of crisis.

Our top priority at Faith, Hope, and Love Global Ministries remains serving and supporting theological students, pastors, and Christian leaders in Myanmar. It is so important that we not abandon our friends and co-workers in the midst of this pandemic, when their needs are greater and their fears are mounting.

As of the writing of this update, most foreigners are still not allowed back into Myanmar, and the projected date to re-open the country keeps getting pushed back 15 days at a time. I hope to be able return to Myanmar by January, in time for the beginning of second semester; but in this pandemic era, any plans for travel and ministry abroad are tentative at best.

Thus, for the foreseeable future, I expect to be stationed in Minneapolis, teaching and mentoring via the internet along with writing and providing more resources for theological students, pastors, and other Christian leaders. The good news is that, since pivoting to online ministry, we have actually been able to reach more people during this COVID Season than we ever imagined.
More specifically, God has swung open many new doors for ministry that were not envisioned, let alone planned for, six months ago.
  • Over the past four months, I posted 13 short essays, which were published on my blog site, www.spirit-ledleader.com, which garnered nearly 6000 views to the site since March.
  • One of our Chin associates and former FHLGM staff member, Peter Hrang Lian Thang, taught our Spirit-led leadership material to a combined total of over 28,000 people over four days in April.
  • I am now meeting regularly with 14 Burmese faculty members in smaller groups based on which Myanmar seminary or college they teach at. These teachers are here in the USA doing graduate work. (See photo, above, of six MIT faculty, during our most recent monthly meeting via Zoom.)
  • What We Can Expect from God Now: Seven Truths for Troubling Times was published this month. This 85 page, full color devotional is based on nine essays posted on my blog site. (See below for more details.)
  • Thanks to Zoom technology, we are now able to conduct training in various locations in Myanmar, which would have never been imagined pre-COVID-19. Pictured immediately above is the announcement that went out on Facebook inviting Burmese people from around the world to hear me present a paper on contextual theology in July. 44 people attended from Myanmar, USA, Hong Kong, India, and Taiwan. (See photo at the beginning of the newsletter.) After my presentation, the Q&A period went for over two hours. The seminar only stopped because it was after midnight on the East Coast in the USA and the respondent couldn't keep his eyes open any longer!
  • We have also been expanding our ministries through associates in Vietnam, Cambodia, India, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, primarily through the translation and distribution of my essays and new book.

Please pray for our many associates, students, and c0-workers in Myanmar and elsewhere around the globe during this vexing COVID Season. Pray, too, that we at FHLGM will be able to rise to the occasion to stand with them in as many ways as possible. We are definitely in uncharted waters, but it is exciting to see how the Holy Spirit has already been leading, guiding, and blessing in the midst of it all. We don't know how long this season will last, but I can hardly wait to see what God is going to do next!
Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
(Eph. 3:20-21, NRSV)

In response to the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the subsequent riots and protests, Tim felt led to change plans to create a special series of posts, exploring how Jesus’s teaching and example call us to reach out across racial lines to respond compassionately and intentionally to those who suffer unjustly in society.
