JANUARY 2021 NEWS
Dear ROSA Community,

I hope that your 2021 is off to a productive start. We at ROSA spent the beginning of this year reflecting on all that we accomplished in 2020 and chronicled these developments in our Year in Review – please take a look and share it with others. Thank you to everyone involved for their tireless efforts to launch ROSA – in the midst of a pandemic -- and position us to begin working on research this year. I am really proud of our collective achievements and am excited about all that I know we will accomplish this year.

Director of Research Search

I am pleased to announce that we have started the search for ROSA’s first Director of Research. The director will have responsibility for overseeing all of ROSA’s research, with a goal of deepening understanding of the interactions between offshore wind and marine ecosystems. We are seeking an experienced scientist with a strong track record of managing multidisciplinary teams to address complex problems in natural resource science and management. You can read more about the position and desired qualifications in the job description. Please share widely. Applications are due by February 28 and we hope to select someone for the position by the end of March.
Upcoming Advisory Council Meeting

The next Advisory Council meeting, which is open to the public, will be held on March 5 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Please save the date and check rosascience.org for an agenda in coming weeks.

Research Advisor Application Review

ROSA recently solicited applications for Research Advisors, who will provide independent, scientific input to the council and committees. Thank you to everyone who applied. We received a great response and are in the process of reviewing all of the applications, with a goal of having advisors selected in February. Advisors will be added periodically to ensure that ROSA’s Research Advisors encompass extensive expertise in the wide range of research topics that we will be exploring.

Research and Monitoring Guidance Update

Thank you to everyone who provided comments on the Interim Fisheries Resources Research and Monitoring Guidelines. The ROSA working group is in the process of incorporating comments into the document, as well as reaching out to our state and federal partners to ensure that our recommendations align with existing regulatory standards. We hope that this will result in a more comprehensive document that addresses the excellent feedback we have received to date. We anticipate having an updated draft available in late February.

Special Oceanography Issue

In December a special issue of Oceanography magazine was published, titled Understanding the Effects of Offshore Wind Development on Fisheries. If you have not seen this issue, I highly recommend that you read it. The issue provides an overview of what has been learned about offshore wind farm impacts on fisheries based on research, monitoring, and engagement with the fishing industry. Several articles highlight ROSA and its mission. Kudos to all of the authors and everyone involved in planning this important issue.

Best wishes for a healthy and fruitful 2021! I am grateful for your partnership as we dive into the heart of ROSA’s work – research and monitoring – this year.
Best Regards,

Lyndie Hice-Dunton, Ph.D.
