From the President's Desk
Dear Colleagues,
I hope that you are enjoying some spring sunshine in your part of the world!
While much has been put on hold in the past few months, I am proud to report that the AAVN continues to move forward. A few of our recent accomplishments include:
- Moving the AAVN Symposium online! The event will now take place on June 10th and 11th, via Zoom, and includes all planned programming.
- Raising $25,500 in sponsorship support for the organization
- Updating governing documents for AAVN student chapters
- Working on our new website, with a planned launch of July 1st. The website will be linked to a membership database that will allow members to login to update/edit their own profiles.
- Publishing a monthly e-newsletter for the 5th consecutive month
I hope you will join me to celebrate these milestones at the AAVN Business Meeting on June 11th, 2:15 pm- 3 pm EST. I look forward to seeing your smiling faces online!
As always, thank you for your membership!

Etiquette Tips for Videoconferencing
As we look ahead to the AAVN Research Symposium in a virtual format, we recognize that some AAVN members might benefit from learning about videoconferencing etiquette.
Yes, there is such a thing! Over the past 8 weeks of self-isolation there have been numerous articles published, blogs posted, and videos showcasing the dos and don’ts of videoconferencing etiquette.
Washing your hair, wearing pants and generally looking presentable are the basics, quickly followed by testing your equipment, minimizing distractions, and muting your microphone to avoid background noises.
Here are a few examples of one of the many articles we researched:
Perhaps more importantly, however, if you haven’t yet seen the Scottish sportscaster, Andrew Cotter, and his two dogs, Mabel and Olive, it’s worth a bit of time to see how boredom can turn into short but clever videos….

AAVN Student Chapters are Growing!
Twenty-five and 30 years ago, the world of veterinary nutrition was pretty small. If you were a resident in a training program in the USA, you knew all the other residents, their mentors, the research they were conducting, and most of the 3 or 4 dozen nutritionists who attended the annual meeting. There were no training programs in Canada, Mexico, or South America. There were no student clubs focused solely on nutrition. But thankfully, a lot has changed during the past couple of decades! Companion animal nutrition is now a topic of growing interest among recent veterinary graduates and current veterinary students and that bodes very well for the health and future of the AAVN.
Our organization supports student chapters at more than 10 veterinary schools across North America. Students representing these institutions will be attending our annual research symposium in a few weeks. Specific activities for student members will be scheduled on June 10
th
and 11th, including a panel to discuss careers in nutrition, and a formal gathering of student representatives to talk about engagement and the future of nutrition training and education.
The AAVN is proud to support Student Chapters at the following institutions:
Atlantic Veterinary College
Colorado State University
Cornell
Iowa State University
Midwestern Veterinary College
Mississippi State University
North Carolina State University
Ontario Veterinary College
University of Missouri
University of Wisconsin at Madison
Washington State University
