Greetings!

With many of you heading off for that delayed-by-a-year, post-school trip, our editor on the road catching up with old friends and former colleagues in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and along the Hudson Valley, and the our publisher fighting the first hot-humid-days malaise in LA, we offer a summer solstice shortened version of Revitalize. No data other than The New York Times "State of the Virus" and we limit ourselves to four articles, the last including a quote from your publisher.

Firstly, Ed Yong, The Atlantic’s lead Covid-19 reporter has been linked here many times and we have praised him often for his great work. The Pulitzer Prize Committee, a bit more prestigious organization than us, rewarded The Atlantic and he with a Pulitzer Prize and we link you to the Atlantic’s posting of his complete works including his most recent must read article.

Secondly, NPR and Planet Money’s "Woman work and the Pandemic" reports “Millions of women left their jobs during the pandemic because of childcare. Now that schools are reopening and lockdowns are lifting, many women are going back to work... but many aren't. How is the situation right now from the perspectives of an economist and a mother?”

Whether driving to visit family and friends, in a newly opened office or sitting inside in a favorite cafe you need a break from reading or listening to "On Being" or Proust, you need a break and time to laugh and reflect on the past 15 months. The New Yorker’s "A Lexicon for the Late Pandemic." To convince you to hit the link, here are two phrases you should be using accurately:

  • Someday, Noneday, Whoseday?, Whensday?, Blursday, Whyday?, Doesn’tmatterday: Days of the week.
  • Parenting: The ability to figure out why the PlayStation isn’t working with the Wi-Fi.”

Enjoy our early vacation efforts and Jerry Seelig offering perspective in this article, "Records show more than $428 million in government payments to nursing homes investigated by LAist;" from all along the Hudson and Culver City, this is Revitalize for June 17, 2021.
Revitalize: The week in health-care news you need
State of the virus: The United States has been averaging fewer than 15,000 cases a day since early June, the lowest totals since testing became widely available.
Nationwide, about 600,000 deaths have been linked to the virus. Around 350 deaths are being reported each day, the fewest since March 2020.
The pace of vaccination has slowed considerably, to around a million doses a day, down from a peak of more than 3.3 million doses a day in mid-April.
Woman work and the pandemic. Over 4 million women left the workforce during the pandemic. At home, women report shouldering more responsibilities than men do. Economist Allison Schrager closely monitors women's employment to population ratio, which slid below 50 person for the first time since the 1980s last year. She worries about the many women that are forced to leave work and the permanent damage done to their careers.

A Lexicon for the late pandemic. You deserve this break
time to laugh and laugh.

Records show more than $428 million in government payments to nursing homes investigated by LAist.
