Even though it is not Thanksgiving yet (maybe the cooler weather has us thinking ahead), we want to give thanks for your kind, generous, and dependable donations and support throughout the year. We are so grateful to have been able to see many of you in person again and hope that continues.
Over the past year we were able to enjoy our Cocktails in the Courtyard events in both Charleston and Columbia, and found success in our Midlands Gives Campaign and #givingtuesday fundraisers. We were able to increase our funding to a list of 40 grantees! So it proved to be a successful and powerful year! With the money raised through our events and fundraiser, the SC Bar Foundation has improved our efficiency and effective measures in order to support these wonderful organizations helping the least among us every day. So much so, that at least 84 cents of every dollar goes into the community supporting the organizations that are working to improve the lives of those in need around us. We would not be able to do any of this without your help. Please know we remain in awe of your continuous generosity.
Your consistency of support demonstrates the care and concern you have for your neighbors and the work that we do at the SC Bar Foundation. If you are compelled to show even more support or want to educate a colleague, encouraging them to also become a supporter, here is a cumulative list for reference:
- Recognize your friends and family with a gift in their memory or in honor.
- Participate in the End of the Year giving challenge before December 31, 2022 at 11:59 p.m.
- Turn your gift into recurring gift- weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually. You set the amount and forget that you need to donate.
- Donate stock or life insurance to ensure you make a lasting impact.
- Ensure a justice legacy by including the SC Bar Foundation in your will or estate plan. If you are 70 Ā½ or older, you can make tax-free gifts directly from your IRA.
- Make a pledge and pay monthly, weekly, quarterly or at the end of the year.
- Follow our social media outlets, and like, share, or comment on our posts.

- Tell your colleagues what influences you to support the Foundation.
We are looking forward to seeing many of our Charleston friends on October 25th and we are eagerly planning more events around the state in the spring of 2023!

Two weeks from today the SC Bar Foundation will host our signature event, Cocktails in the Courtyard, taking place for the third time where it all began - Charleston! Join us in celebrating fall's cooler temperatures on Tuesday, October 25th, at 5:30 p.m. at the historic William Aiken House in downtown Charleston.
Attendees can catch up with old friends, connect with new colleagues and learn about the SC Bar Foundation and the work of its wonderful grantees. Governor McMaster joins Turn90, formerly Turning Leaf, to Open Columbia Reentry Center in Oct. 2021 |

Turn90, formerly known as Turning Leaf, began as a successful prison re-entry program founded in Charleston. They work with men at the highest risk of re-arrest, by combining cognitive behavioral classes, case management, transitional work, and job placement to create an opportunity for success after prison where one doesn't currently exist. In October 2021, they opened a new center in Columbia and just recently announced plans to open a third location in Greenville-Spartanburg making their program accessible statewide.
āWe have big dreams,ā says Turn90 Founder and Executive Director, Amy Barch. āOur goal is to become the first ever nationally recognized evidence-based prison re-entry program."
The nonprofit celebrated its new name and expansion with an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, October 27th. Honored speakers included Governor Henry McMaster, SC State Representatives Todd Rutherford and Kambrell Garvin, City of Columbiaās Mayor Steve Benjamin, and Bryan Stirling, Director of the South Carolina Department of Corrections. The ribbon was cut by Governor McMaster and Turn90 graduate and staff member Aulzue āBlueā Fields.
"There's talent here," said Governor McMaster during the ceremony. "But, what we have to do is to teach those who have not been taught how to use their talent and how to put it to work for them, their families and the next generation that will be coming behind them and watching them."
The expansion and name change would not have been possible without the support of community partners like the SC Bar Foundation and its donors. We thank YOU for being a part of this exciting new opprotunity for those on the other side of the legal system.

What initially led you to become involved with the SCBF?
I have served on several local nonprofit organizations and know what an impact the SC Bar Foundation grants can make. I wanted to a be a part of that process.
What is your hope for the SC Bar Foundation in the next 5 years?
My hope is that the SC Bar Foundation increases donations by our SC Bar members by showing our members the amazing work that is being done across the state by the organizations supported by the Bar Foundation.
Is there a specific grantee that really pulls on your heartstrings as a board and bar member that youāre very honored to support? If so, why is that?
The Rainy Day Fund ā I was moved when I heard the story of how this organization began. A young lawyer saw a need and took action. The public defender saw the financial burdens (think cost of a birth certificate ($12) or a PTI application fee ($150)) that were preventing clients from achieving success. The public defender found like-minded public interest lawyers, social workers, etc. to form The Rainy Day Fund. The Fund is trying to eliminate as many of the financial barriers as possible so recipients have a real shot at success.
Do you have any exciting vacations planned for the rest of this year or 2023?
I am headed to NYC to visit my oldest daughter. We will have great fun and her younger sister is going to join us.

DuRant Distinguished Public Service Award
|
In 1980, the Foundation established the DuRant Distinguished Public Service Award in memory of Charlton DuRant, a well-known Manning attorney who served as state senator and special associate justice of the SC Supreme Court. Today, this award is one of the most prestigious statewide honors that members of the Bar can bestow on a fellow attorney. Annually, recipients are nominated and selected by their professional peers. Selection criteria include meritorious service to the law and the community. Eligibility is limited to living members of the South Carolina Bar. Sitting judges and current public office holders are not eligible, however, past service in such positions will be considered. Traditionally, the award recipient is honored at the Bar Conventionās plenary luncheon each January.
