MNORC Awards Underrepresented Minority Pilot/Feasibility Grants
The Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center recently awarded two $45,000 pilot and feasibility grants. Awardees were selected from applicants from underrepresented minority backgrounds interested in nutrition, metabolism, or obesity from the University of Michigan.
Cristina Saenz de Miera Patin, PhD was awarded a grant for the project titled "Prenatal photoperiodic programming of the developing metabolic hypothalamus."
Sonya Wolf-Fortune, PhD was awarded a grant for the project titled "Dysregulation of keratinocyte/macrophage axis in obesity driven diabetic wounds."
Let the Nutrition, Exercise and Phenotyping Testing Core Help You!
The Nutrition, Exercise and Phenotyping Testing (NExT) Core of the Michigan Nutrition and Obesity Research Center is available to assist you with your human/clinical studies. Core staff can help you:
  • navigate challenges starting or restarting your human/clinical research studies due to the pandemic.
  • transition aspects of your data collection from an in-person to virtual setting and back again.
  • modify your study design to increase safety for your patients/participants, as well as the study team.
  • expand the scope of your project to include comprehensive nutrition and/or physical activity datasets.
  • design and implement a dietary, weight loss or exercise training program.

Leveraging Health Information Technology to Conduct Obesity and Diabetes Research
The Caswell Diabetes Institute Informatics and Clinical Research Innovation Program helps researchers make the leap from data to insights. The data repository amasses local electronic health record data of Michigan Medicine patients since 2012. University of Michigan researchers may request de-identified or aggregate/summary-level data, limited/coded datasets, or full-PHI (identifiable) datasets for secondary analyses.

In partnership with the newly established Childhood Obesity Research Core (CORC) of the Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center (MNORC), researchers may request one-on-one consultation during any stage of their research. Complimentary services include data queries, design and development of customized provider- and patient-facing health IT tools such as Epic-integrated Smart-Sets and flowsheets, visual dashboards to better understand and interpret data, and consultation on study design, data availability, statistical methods, and IRB submissions/requirements.

Funding Opportunities
The American Diabetes Association is requesting applications for research focused on the impact of diabetes on health disparities and, the impact of health disparities on diabetes and its complications.
Deadline: May 28, 2021
The purpose of the MNORC Pilot /Feasibility (P/F) Grant Program is to promote research on the biological and behavioral determinants of obesity, and to develop interventions to reduce obesity and its disease sequelae using basic, clinical, or population approaches. The P/F program’s aim is to enable both new and established University of Michigan investigators to generate sufficient preliminary information for a successful application for major research funding from NIH or other national granting agencies.

Training Opportunities
Pennington Biomedical Research Center is seeking postdoctoral fellows interested in the complex interactions between genetic, molecular, physiological, behavioral and environmental aspects of obesity. These fellowships will be supported by an NIH T32 training grant entitled “Training in Obesity Research” which provides up to three years of funding including NIH salary, benefits, travel, and research support.
The dkNET(NIDDK Information Network) team invites students who work with your center researchers to apply for the Summer of Data Student Internship Program. The Summer of Data program provides students the opportunity to learn data management, FAIR data and rigor and reproducibility skills while performing their research. It is a 6 week virtual summer program where students engage in weekly sessions with dkNET staff and associates to learn about how to use dkNET and other tools to support their research, while engaging in research projects within their labs.
