May's Theme is Story
Hello Families,

I hope you have a chance to celebrate the mothers in your life this week. I like to think about all the ways that people "mother" in this world: for example, the ways that people take care of each other and the ways that people "give birth" to new ideas and projects. I like to celebrate the people in my life who may or may not have kids, but who I see "mothering" and creating beauty in their own ways.
This week we have stories of family and mothers and the incredible love that flows throughout.

And for your convenience, all past newsletters can be found here on the UUCSC website
A Time for All Ages
My mom
This week, I wanted to tell a story about moms. I found many great books, some of which are below in the story section. And I found many wonderful personal accounts of mothers. Then I realized that I could tell about my mother! So I hope you enjoy my little stories about my mom. I hope it inspires you to collect stories from your mom or caregiver as well!
Stories for RE
Picture Books
Check on this amazing booklist for the month of May and the theme of Story. Over 100 titles for all ages! I hope you enjoy these three for Mother's Day!
The Zero Dads Club, by Angel Adeyoha. This sweet story is about a group of kids who come together to celebrate their caregivers, none of whom are dads. They each tell the story of their family and celebrate each other.
In Our Mother's House, by Patricia Polacco. A joyful story of a family with two moms and three adopted children. A sweet celebration of moms and family, through a whole lifetime of stories and love.
Mama's Nightingale: A story of Immigration and Separation, by Edwidge Danticat. Told from a child's perspective of having her mama in a detention center, without proper documentation. The girl writes her story to be printed in a newspaper, with the media attention, her mama gets permission to come home.
Soulful Connections
A Collective Story
Let's tell a story together! Sign up this week and we'll begin on May 12th!
This is an ambitious project, but I think we can do it! The idea is that I will start a story in writing and also record myself telling it. Then I will email it to another family and they will add onto it in writing. Everyone will have the option of making a video of their part of the story. Then at the end, we will have a whole story in writing. I will put it together in a video, with video clips from families and I will narrate the parts without video.

Sign up here to take part! Or just respond to this email to participate.
Mindful Moment
Celebrating Mamas and mothering!
Take a moment this week to tell a mom that they're special. And let's think not only about moms, but also about those of us who "mother" in other ways or who have "given birth" to big creations besides babies. :)
So make a phone call, send a card, make a short video and tell someone that you see them and appreciate them.

Pictures from the week
What a beautiful world we live in.
A spring tradition for me is gathering stinging nettles! I use them in tea blends, iron syrup, infused vinegar and tincture blends. Nettles are powerhouses of vitamins and minterals! Yay spring!
My and Sylvan's Beltane mandala with a magic potion in the center. How wonderful to make springtime magic together. Have you made a springtime mandala yet?
This is Sylvan and my Beltane mandala from last year. We'd love to see yours this year! If you make one, send us a picture!
