City Council Honors Hispanic Heritage and Family Promise of Forsyth
Mayor Troy Brumbalow and City Council presented proclamations honoring Hispanic Heritage Month and Family Promise Week during their meetings in October.

Sept. 15 - Oct. 15 was declared Hispanic Heritage Month with a proclamation honoring all residents of Cumming and Forsyth County of Hispanic heritage who contribute to the success of our local community.

Oct. 18-25 was proclaimed Family Promise Week in honor of Family Promise of Forsyth County. The nonprofit, with its main offices inside the Cumming City Limits, works with area faith-based organizations and other volunteers to assist homeless families and children. Family Promise provides help with safe places to stay, food, and other needs until the families can get back on their feet.

Also during the October Work Session and Regular Meeting, City Council:

  • Approved a resolution to authorize the City of Cumming to submit a pre-application to the Department of Natural Resources for possible grant funding of up to $500,000 from the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

  • Accepted the low bid from Cooper & Company for the concrete work on Buildings A, B, C, D and M at the Cumming City Center.

  • Approved a recommendation to purchase stream mitigation credits in order to place culvert pipe, rather than arch span type culvert, at four of the six required stream crossings at the Cumming City Center. This action will result in a substantial savings for the project.

  • Approved a variance request for Orchard Apartments, LLC., which will allow for construction of an additional 21 units on the property, located at 105 Orchard Circle and 116 Meadow Drive. During a public hearing, the property owner noted that these apartments are primarily geared toward lower income seniors. Council approved the variance with 12 conditions from the Planning & Zoning Commission, and an additional condition that 80 percent of the units be age-restricted to 55 and older (at least one person in the residence must be 55 or older).

  • Approved a request to rezone 1.164 acres at 415 Dahlonega Street from Single-Family Residential to Office Professional for the purpose of utilizing the property as office space.

  • Approved the low bid from ACG Security System, Inc. for installation of new security cameras at the Water Production Facility and Raw Water Intake Facility.

  • Approved the low proposal from North Georgia Pipeline, Inc. for decommissioning the Lanier Walk Subdivision Wastewater Pumping Station due to issues with overloading the downstream sewer system.

  • Announced that the November Work Session would be postponed until Wednesday, Nov. 4 as a result of City Hall being utilized as a polling place during the General Election on Nov. 3.
