The Nineteenth Sunday

After Pentecost

Luke 18:1-8

"The judge is this...

but God is that"

Rev. Mitch Maxted

Message from the Pastor

The congregation surprised me on Sunday by presenting our family with a wind chime. I wasn't expecting a gift and initially had no idea what I was seeing when I peered into the gift bag and saw the upside down sound tubes. "Is this a tripod or something?" I wondered. Gary Tucker and Linda Glover then rescued me from my awkwardness and explained that it was a wind chime.

At home, after worship and our fellowship lunch/"Mission Ignition" meeting, I took it out of the bag and listened to the sound. The tones are clear and bright and the "sail" that catches the wind says "God grant me the serenity." We'll have to experiment a bit at home to decide whether it will be better hanging from one of our two trees out front, or from our porch out back.

Thank you, Round Rock Christian Church for this kindness. The gift reminds me of Jesus' words in John 3:8--"The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”

Peace in Christ,

Pastor Mitch

Appreciating Pastor Mitch

October is Pastor Appreciation Month and during Sunday's service we recognized Pastor Mitch & wife Kumi. Mitch has served RRCC for almost seven years while Kumi has supported the family by working retail.

On behalf of the worship committee Linda Glover purchased a wind chime and Gary Tucker presented this to Pastor Mitch on behalf of Round Rock Christian Church. Thank you Mitch & Kumi for all you do!

Open Circle Class News

On October 16, the Open Circle Class will begin a new Sunday School study of Barbara Brown Taylor’s Mixed Blessings:

In this new edition of her earliest collection of sermons Barbara Brown Taylor brings her down-to-earth wisdom and keen perspective to the Bible readings of the lectionary cycle. Originally preached for the congregation of All Saints' Episcopal Church in downtown Atlanta, the topics of these sermons range from conversations with Abraham and Moses in the texts of the Hebrew scriptures to our awareness of the communion of saints and how to recognize a miracle when one comes our way.

As with all Open Circle studies, no advance preparation is required, and drop-ins always are welcome. The class meets in the downstairs classroom at the west end of the gym.

Lunch Bunch

This Sunday, the Lunch Bunch will be meeting at China Wall after Worship Service.

Join us for an All-Church Fellowship Luncheon this Sunday after worship service. All are welcome! Contact Tasha York for more information.

Elders Prayer/Closing Message

Reach Out

“By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 13:35

When Christianity comes under attack, many believers pull back from sharing their faith. But it’s not just in openly sharing the Gospel that we can touch lives for Christ. The slightest ray of light shone into someone else’s life will often give that person pause to ponder, question, and seek out its source. Planting the seed is important, even if the first reaction to faith is aversion. We are called to reach out—to meet people’s needs right where they are—and consequently, show them the love of Jesus. Whether it’s working a suicide hotline, sending a card to someone in the hospital, serving hot meals in a soup kitchen, or simply volunteering at a nursing home—every act of kindness can help spread the Gospel in new and unique ways. You may be the only way others see the love of God. So get out in the community, and show people you care about them.

Love them as Christ loves us. “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind

word, a listening ear. an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the power to turn a life around.” --- Leo Buscaglia

Lord, we have all felt the need for a kind word at some time in our lives. Let us remember that, and not grow weary in the pursuit of this high calling: to do unto others as we would have them do unto us.
