TUESDAY MEMO
5th graders Zoe, Willa, Phoenix, Raya, and Fiona worked on a Sumac and Statistics project that involved collecting data on sumac leaflets, making scientific sketches, and finding statistics on the number of leaflets.
Greetings!

We are celebrating a ton of opportunities for our students with after school activities and high school choices. Riverside apparel is ready for order! And we appreciate your flexibility as things change, like our soccer and winter concert schedule. Making these changes helps us support other organizations too.

Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES
RACE BACK TO SCHOOL
This Thursday, after school! We want to connect with 1) the outdoors 2) local organizations that have similar missions to ours and 3) more students from the NEK who would be a good fit with our mission. So please plan to register some or all of your family for Race Back to School! Don't worry, you don't have to commit to staying the whole time. Choose if you want to walk, run, or ride. Choose your laps and fun stations. Choose when you're done.

In advance, seek pledges from friends, family, and neighbors. Dollars per lap? Dollars per point? Dollars per hour? A total gift for meeting a goal? Funds raised by your pledges will go directly to Riverside's growing scholarship/tuition assistance program.

If you don't want to hit the trails, pledge to support someone else!
SOCCER FROM COACH SEAN
  • Today's 7-8th game against Craftsbury has been cancelled because of too many Riverside players having commitments to another team with a game at the same time. Rescheduling will be challenging to coordinate with 3 teams' schedules, but we will try.
  • Wednesday: 7-8th vs KES at home at 5:00
  • Friday at 3:45 pm, adults vs students game; come join in the fun.
SCHOOL PICTURES
School pictures will be taken by Whipple Studios this Friday, October 14, starting at about 8:15 am. If you haven't returned your order forms yet please do so before Friday. If you do not want to order any pictures, simply write that on the order form and return it.
3-5TH GRADE SWIMMING
Our 3-5th graders will be swimming this Friday, October 14, please remember to pick them up at NVU at 3:15. Other swim dates are: October 21, and 28.
RIVERSIDE APPAREL ORDERS
Show your school community pride! An order form for Riverside apparel is going home with students today. Please plan to return it with payment by Friday, November 4. Orders will be in before the winter holidays.
WINTER FRIDAYS
November-December: K-8th grade skating, two houses each Friday. We are still working on the plans for what the other two groups will do. Stay tuned for more details about the schedule. Rental skates will be available at a small charge to your school store account, your child will simply need to know their shoe size.

January-February: K-8th grade downhill skiing/riding or cross-country skiing. The logistics for these programs are intense, and begin with you letting us know your preferences and needs on this form. Please complete it by the end of the week.
SELF STUDY UPDATE
We (faculty, staff, trustees, parent and alumni parent volunteers) are in the middle of a 2-year reflection process that we hope will conclude with earning our re-accreditation by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges. A couple updates at this point:
  • Here is a summary of the discussions and reports written by those who worked on five Foundation Standard areas (governance, enrollment, resources, qualified adults, and health and safety). Seeing clear themes of similar kinds of achievements and challenges demonstrates authenticity and some clear paths toward being even better at what we do.
  • Two peer administrators (Matthew Hicks from the Shaker Road School in Concord, NH and Sara Primo from the Friends School of Portland, ME) have read our five reports and associated documentation, and will be visiting Riverside throughout the day next Monday, October 17, in order to verify what they read and to help us celebrate what we do well and strategize what we might want to prioritize doing better. If you see them on campus, please welcome and converse with them.
  • Program Committees who will discuss standards more closely related to students and learning, are at work and will be drafting reports this winter. Thank you so much to their chairs: Peter Sahlin, Joel Gilbert, Marie Sullivan, Carrie Stahler, Caroline Thompson.
PLAN FOR WHAT YOU NEED
Please help students to think about the day ahead and what they need to be prepared:

Musical Instruments: Band and instrument lesson students should be sure they have their instruments with them on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and their lesson days.

Dress for the Weather: All PreK-8th grade students should have what they need to be outside during the school day no matter the weather. With the exception of lightning, thunder, or temperatures well below freezing, our teachers plan to continue with outdoor learning opportunities.
*NEW* CALENDAR UPDATE
LI had a change in its schedule, and so our winter concert and art show will now have to be on Wednesday, December 14, at 5:30 pm at the Lyndon Institute Auditorium.
FAMILY CONTACT LIST v.2
Thank you to everyone who helped us identify errors in the family contact list. A new version will be emailed out to parents this week. We didn't want to link it here because the MM is somewhat public when posted to our website.
BLESSED WITH HIGH SCHOOL CHOICES
We in the NEK are so fortunate to offer our children/students an opportunity to choose the high school that is the best fit for them, their learning styles, and their goals. We hope that families recognize this as an opportunity to practice mature decision making, and take advantage of the ways we can all learn more about the different high schools.
  • Admission Visits to 8th Grade Advisory: SJA on Oct 17; LI on Oct 24
  • Meet and Chat with Brian Bloomfield, LI Head of School: Oct 27, 5:00 at Riverside (6-8th grade families welcome)
  • St. Johnsbury Academy Open House: Thursday, Nov. 3, 6:30 pm, details and registration here
  • Lyndon Institute Open House: Wednesday, Nov. 9, 5:00-7:30, details and registration here
POLICY UPDATES
As part of the regular work of the Governance Committee of the Board of Trustees, we have updated a few policies to bring them into line with the most current state-suggested language. These updates will be referenced in next year’s Family Handbooks. The two recent updates are in the areas of restraint (which we do not do), and bullying/hazing/harassment. Full text is available at the links, the updated language has minor differences from the previous versions.
ABUSE PREVENTION TRAINING
The faculty at Riverside annually receives instruction provided by Umbrella on the prevention, identification, and reporting of child sexual abuse and violence. If as a parent or guardian you are interested in also attending this, please reach out to Roy and he will let you know when the next session is scheduled.
FREE GOLF CART
The green golf cart that the students restored is available for free to a good home. It needs what should be an easy electrical fix, otherwise, it runs well. It is a 1978 Harley Davidson and would be worth a fair amount of money if fully restored. Please email Roy if you are interested or have questions.
TENNIS CLUB
K-5 Tennis Club will meet this Wednesday at Powers Park from 4:00-4:30, weather permitting. For the next two weeks, the club will switch to Tuesdays, from 3:15-4:15.
MTN BIKE CLUB
K-8 Mountain Bike Club will ride again this Wednesday. We will plan to meet at the Inn at Mountain View Farm parking lot and ride the trails around there to get familiar with the Race Back to School course. Both the beginner and intermediate rides will start at 4 and end around 5:15.
CERTAMEN PRACTICE
6-8th graders going on the Latin trip to Yale Certamen have practice sessions this Wednesday and Thursday from 3:45-4:45.
HIKING CLUB
4-8 Hiking Club will take the Haystack Mountain trail on Friday. If you'd like your child to get a ride to the hike with parent Scott DesJardins, please email Sean. Students will need to be picked up at the trailhead at 6:30
CRAZY 8s
3-5th grade Crazy 8s club will meet this Wednesday from 3:40-4:30. Please remember to pick up your child when the session ends and not expect them to return to the Extended Day Program.
FLU VACCINE CLINIC
Little Rivers Healthcare has graciously offered to help put on a flu vaccine clinic on campus if there is enough interest. They would need consent for anyone under 18 and would also need insurance information. If you are interested, please email Roy by Wednesday so we can figure out if there would be enough participants to make this worthwhile.
