Stan Gerson, MD
Director, Case Comprehensive Cancer Center
|
|
Diehl appointed Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer
|
I am pleased to announce the appointment of
J. Alan Diehl, PhD as Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer (DD/COO) of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (Case CCC). This newly created role, established in the context of my
taking on the role of interim Dean, will provide substantive oversight of the Cancer Center to pursue its mission to advance cancer research, training, community outreach and local and national impact as an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center. Dr. Diehl will work closely with me to coordinate activities based on the recently updated strategic plan, the priorities identified by the Executive Committee (of which he has been a member since arriving at Case Western Reserve University), and to augment existing efforts towards large multi-investigator initiatives and grant applications.
|
|
Alan is well suited for this Deputy Director role. He joined Case Western Reserve University in 2019 as the Chair of the Department of Biochemistry in the School of Medicine. Alan brings decades of leadership experience in NCI-designated cancer centers, first as Director of the Cancer Cell Biology Program at the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, and most recently as Associate Director of Basic Science at Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Alan’s personal research focuses on the discovery of molecular mechanisms that contribute to uncontrolled cell proliferation and decreased cell death. He is an expert in Program Project Grants (PPGs) and has already advised multiple Case CCC member groups gearing towards submissions. Alan also serves on multiple External Advisory Boards for NCI-designated cancer centers.

Advances in GU Malignancy Research
|
|
Above: Abhishek Chakraborty, PhD, Nima Sharifi, MD and Shaun Stauffer, PhD
|
|
The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (Case CCC) extends congratulations to three members on recent accomplishments in the field of genitourinary (GU) malignancy research.
First,
Abhishek Chakraborty, PhD, a cancer biologist at Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute (CCLRI),
received his first federal grant, a four-year Early-Career Investigator Award of over $1 million from the Department of Defense's Kidney Cancer Research Program. He will study one candidate oncogene's contributions to kidney cancer, looking specifically at the role it may play in cancer cell metabolism.
Nima Sharifi, MD, director of the Center for GU Malignancies Research at CCLRI and Program Leader of the Case CCC's GU Malignancies Program and his team partnered with the Cleveland Clinic's molecular pathology laboratory to launch
a genetic test that can help physicians manage patients with prostate cancer. The test allows for advancement of precision and genomic medicine as it identifies a variation of the
HSD3B1 gene with the study showing men with the androgen-permissive allele more quickly developed treatment-resistant cancer and had shorter overall survival.
Shaun Stauffer, PhD, director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Therapeutics Discovery and member of the Case CCC's Developmental Therapeutics Program, and
Dr. Sharifi have been interrogating prostate cancer drug targets together since 2018. Now, with a
new three-year, $1.2 million award from the Department of Defense's Prostate Cancer Research Program, they are moving forward with development of a drug that will inhibit the metabolic enzyme produced by the genetic variant.

Join Team Case CCC in VeloSano 2020!
|
The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (Case CCC) is honored to make its sixth appearance in
VeloSano, a year-round fundraising initiative and "Bike to Cure" weekend to support lifesaving cancer research. Our continuing goal is to bring sustainable funding to cancer research by enlisting the passion and energy of thousands of people who wish to give back... including
YOU! We raised nearly $94,000 in 2019 and every dollar goes directly toward cancer research. In our six years of participation, more than $1,000,000 of VeloSano fundraising totals have come back to the Case CCC to award researchers as pilot funding for cancer research projects.
|
|
The Case CCC will provide complimentary registration fees and jerseys again this year. Contact team captains
Caroline El Sanadi or
Mary Wright for the registration fee waiver code to sign up! While registration is complimentary, all riders are responsible for meeting the minimum fundraising commitment associated with the
distance they ride. Fundraising can begin as soon as you register to ride and continues through October 1, 2020.
Registration is open now and information about volunteering for our cheer station and supporting our team through sponsorship will be available soon!
