President's Message
October was a great month for ADAO’s art, advocacy, and academia and we are expecting an incredible November.
ADAO and ARBAN Stakeholders remain firmly dedicated to getting the Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now (ARBAN) Act passed by this Congress after the election. ADAO sent a letter to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Leadership respectfully urging them to resolve the new opposition and concerns, in an effort to find a path forward for the landmark bill that will ban asbestos, study legacy asbestos, and improve the Chemical Data Reporting rule.
Great news! After initially opposing ADAO and its co-plaintiff’s standing, EPA has now agreed that ADAO has standing, and so does our co-plaintiff the American Public Health Association (APHA), thus demonstrating our commitment to preventing asbestos exposure. We suspect that Judge Chen will accept EPA’s recognition of our standing in this case, which will be argued in the US District Court for the Northern District of California on November 12 at 1:30 pm PST.
We are delighted to share the release of “Warren Zevon’s Greatest Hits (According to Judd Apatow)” album. Curated by Filmmaker, screenwriter, and comedian, Judd Apatow, and in collaboration with ADAO Spokesperson, Jordan Zevon, the album celebrates the music of legendary Warren Zevon. A portion of proceeds from the album will benefit ADAO.
Thanks to the dedication of many, the 12th Annual Alton Miles for Meso Race was a roaring success! More than 1,000 virtual racers, supporters (many from around the world), and volunteers joined together for this tremendous week-long event in support of ADAO’s asbestos awareness, education, and community initiatives.
It's a wrap! Check out the four October Health Literacy Month blogs about prevention, high-risk occupations, early warning symptoms, and treatment.
Mavis and Ray Nye, two amazing Mesothelioma Warriors, will be our guests on November 11 at 1 pm ET for an educational and inspirational conversation on Zoom. Registration is required.
Every year, Australians dedicate the last week of November to asbestos awareness, education and remembrance. We will again support this week as well by sharing seven stories of those impacted by these deadly, yet preventable, diseases.
In the spirit of giving, please consider selecting ADAO as your preferred charity for AmazonSmile and we will receive 0.5% of your eligible purchases at no cost to you. Save the date -- Giving Tuesday will be on December 1st.
Lastly, as we count our blessings this Thanksgiving, ADAO wants to sincerely thank ADAO Leadership, volunteers, donors, and our generous sponsors: Platinum Simmons Hanly Conroy, Gold American Federation of Teachers and Motley Rice, Silver Early, Lucarelli, Sweeney & Meisenkothen, Omaze/CAF America, and Weitz & Luxenberg, and Bronze International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers for supporting our national and international policy and prevention work.
You have proven that even during COVID, together we make change happen.
Linda Reinstein
