Caregiver Support Group
Wednesday, January 12, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Zoom
Caring for a loved one in their season of need is a sacred trust and holy work. At the same time, it can be isolating and exhausting—no matter how much we love the recipient! Often, caregivers need a brief time away to renew their spirits, to just be themselves, and to connect with others in similar circumstances to receive support and encouragement. Pastor Cathy Stone and member Judy Breckbill are the hosts for this time that is open to those currently caring for a loved one or recently in this role, whether in-home or miles apart. Email Judy Breckbill at judybreckbill25@gmail.com with questions or for the Zoom link.

The Hate U Give Movie and Discussion
Sunday, January 16, 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Sanctuary
Our Mercy & Justice Team and youth invite you to watch and discuss the movie The Hate You Give. In this film, Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds -- the poor, mostly black neighborhood where she lives and the wealthy, mostly white prep school that she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is soon shattered when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer. Facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and decide to stand up for what's right. Childcare is available with reservation by emailing childcare@fumcaustin.org. For more information, please email Pastor Cathy at cathy@fumcaustin.org.

FEAST: Aliens and Jesus
Sunday, January 23, 7:30-9:00 p.m.
FLC Great Hall
This month, we will consider a number of questions related to the existence of extraterrestrial life! Whether or not it exists, the possibility raises some interesting questions for Christianity (and other faiths!) that understand humans to have a special, central place within Creation. In addition to Genesis, we will address our traditions and beliefs to think through how we might, as Christians, respond to finding life beyond earth! For more information and/or to get on the FEAST mailing list, visit fumcaustin.org/FEAST or email Pastor Brad King at brad@fumcaustin.org.

This summer and fall, the stone that so beautifully adorns our buildings developed unsafe cracks, and a few pieces even fell to the ground. While we are thankful that no one was injured, we had to quickly deploy professionals to remove any loose pieces in order to ensure the safety of everyone in and around our facilities.
Efforts are underway to determine the extent of repairs needed throughout our facilities, with a full report due in the spring. In the meantime, we expect to spend nearly three times our annual facilities maintenance budget this year just to ensure safety. While we are able to absorb some of this expense in other areas of the budget, we anticipate that our overall expenses will surpass revenue this year by $150,000. Our hope is to offset this loss as much as possible through this year’s Christmas Offering.
Our buildings are essential to the life-changing work we do together. The church is not a building; and yet, the church’s buildings create spaces where transformation happens. Let’s take care of this place, so it can continue to be a tool for God’s work in this world.
Gifts can be made by check or online, designated “Christmas Offering.”
