(Drawing by Joshua Haffele)

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

Galatians 4:4-5

Christmas Eve is coming, you know, less than two days away. There is lots to be done. Gifts to wrap, cookies to bake, and meals to prepare. Busyness rules the day. I am just as guilty, sermons to write, calls to make, services to prepare. It is a busy time of year for us all. The hustling and bustling of the season leaves little time to stop and ponder why we hustle and bustle in the first place. Why do we meet at church? Why do we sing? Why do we bake cookies? Why do we wrap gifts, hang ornaments, and light trees?

Some time ago, I was given a gift from a friend. I have known Joshua most of his young life. He is now in third grade, but still not too big to smile and give his pastor a hug. A few weeks ago Joshua gave me an early Christmas present. A drawing, an original mind you, of a humble brown stable house that opens into the nativity scene- a humble stable, Mary, and Joseph, and baby Jesus all under a radiant star. The words “Love Joshua” decorate the upper left corner of the paper. What an incredible gift!

Joshua reminded me, Reverend Austin D. Kraft, what Christmas is all about. I went to school for ministry and attended one of the finest seminaries in the land, but none of that education compares to the message my friend, Joshua, gave me this Christmas. Joshua’s photo reminded me to stop and receive Jesus as a child. Joshua’s drawing made me stop and ponder what those shepherds saw as they “hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, lying in the manger,” just as the angels had promised. Joshua reminded me, in God’s perfect timing, on a chilly night, in a dirty stable, in the tiny hamlet of Bethlehem, a Savior was born as promised. Joseph named him Jesus because He would save His people from their sins.

Friday night, Christmas Eve, we continue our Advent journey God's Perfect Timing. God's timing is not always our timing, but His timing is always perfect.
See you Friday! I can’t wait!
AMEN

PS. Join us Sunday as we conclude our series “Times of Praise.” (Luke 2:22-40)
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
