A Newsletter for Local Partners
The fACTs newsletter is for TSAHC's local partners in the Affordable Communities of Texas (ACT) program. The quarterly newsletter provides information to help make your programs as successful as possible.
ACT Spotlight:
Accessible Housing Austin!
In this newsletter, we are turning the spotlight to Accessible Housing Austin! (AHA!), one of our partners in the ACT program.

About AHA!

Founded in 2005, AHA! is a disability rights advocacy organization that recognizes that the scarcity of housing is a critical issue for people with disabilities. Its mission is to provide affordable, accessible, integrated housing for low-income people with disabilities.

The organization serves a diverse range of Austinites with physical and mental disabilities, including adults and children, and it is the only housing non-profit in Austin led by members of the disability community.

AHA! owns and operates single-family homes that provide safe, decent, and affordable housing for residents and allow them to live with independence and dignity. The homes feature ramps, wide doorways, roll-under sinks, lowered counter-tops, roll-in showers and other modifications to meet accessibility needs.

AHA's Partnership with TSAHC

In 2010, we entered into a partnership with AHA! through our ACT program in which they rehabilitated and leased out seven previously foreclosed homes. After a successful period of AHA! managing the inventory of homes, we eventually donated all seven to the organization to expand their availability of single-family homes available for people with disabilities.

AHA! at Briarcliff

The organization's most ambitious project to date is AHA! at Briarcliff, a 27-unit apartment complex that will be accessible, affordable, and integrated into an established neighborhood that is close to services, transit, and amenities. The one and two-bedroom apartments will serve households at or below 50% of the median family income.

We're proud to partner with AHA! on this project as well. Thanks in part to Austin Community Foundation and Texas Capital Bank, we were able to invest a total of $995,000 through our Texas Housing Impact Fund to support construction of AHA! at Briarcliff.  The community is under construction with plans to open later in 2020.
Sharing COVID-19 Resources
and Helpful Information
We're committed to the health and well-being of our partners and the community. In that spirit, we created a resources page on our web site to share resources related to the ongoing COVID-19 threat with an emphasis on housing and nonprofit information. We continue to update this page as additional information and resources become available.

Also, please note that TSAHC staff are currently working remotely and will continue to do so until further notice. While our physical office is closed to the public, we're still open for business. All TSAHC staff remain available by phone and email during normal business hours, and our programs continue to operate.  Click here to view our staff contact information.

We are reaching out to our partners and clients regularly to keep them updated on any necessary modifications to our programs and services.
Fair Housing Resources and Information

April is Fair Housing month in honor of the passage of Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act, known as the Fair Housing Act.  The landmark piece of legislation created further protections for the citizens of the United States, prohibiting housing discrimination based on race, religion, national origin, disability, and family status.

The Fair Housing Act protects Americans' right to rent or buy a home, obtain a mortgage, and/or purchase home insurance.

Each year we dedicate a blog post to sharing fair housing resources and information. Click here to read that post.
