Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland
August 2022

Looking Ahead
Thanks to Dr. Lela Bachrach for forwarding this perspective update about health worker burnout from Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA, from August 18, 2022, New England Journal of Medicine. It is on our minds and will be the topic of two long-awaited BCH Oakland & SF all-faculty meetings. The first will occur Sept 1 and the second tentatively on October 27. Both will be recorded. The goal of the first meeting is to galvanize our collective thoughts about our clinical work environment, review the data and suggest 1 or 2 high-impact intervention(s) in concert with UCSF Health Leaders. The follow-up meeting will include department chairs and SOM leaders to discuss shared implementation. We look forward to seeing you virtually.
The good news is that we just hit the low tier for COVID transmission in Alameda County. However, we now have Monkeypox. Our vaccination effort has been very targeted to date but we are working on a plan with county partners and our infectious disease experts to get the vaccine to at-risk populations. County treatment and prevention resources can be found in this advisory. Please take appropriate infection control precautions including PPE.
Streamlining communications is of critical importance. We all use several ways to communicate with each other. There is certainly a quality imperative that we reduce variability in this regard. As of August 1, 2022, all provider, nursing, and clinical support roles are now on Voalte. Please take this time to familiarize yourself with the Voalte Me app and appropriately sign into (and out of) your role. We are setting the deadline for September 1, 2022, to use this system for cross-disciplinary communications within the hospital. SPOK mobile paging is indeed functional as well. Once we are all reliably on Voalte messages from SPOK can forward these messages as alerts through Voalte and eventually Voalte can serve as a pager replacement. Thanks for your partnership as we adopt this critical tool.
Let's see this through!

From Art D'Harlingue, MD
Director of Neonatology
BCH Oakland
The BCH Oakland ECLS Center has been awarded the ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support – Gold Level!
Our ECMO program at BCH-Oakland started in 1988. We recently put our 400th patient on ECMO. The program received the ELSO (Extracorporeal Life Support Organization) award of excellence 3 years ago at the Gold level. We had to reapply this year for the award, and we learned that we were successful once again at the Gold level for the ELSO Award of Excellence. We owe much of this success to the great work of our ECMO co-directors, Dr. Leslie Lusk and Dr. Brendan Gallagher, to our ECMO Nurse Coordinator Carolyn Lund, to all the great ECMO nurses and physicians, and to the support from all the NICU and PICU staff!
The Award Presentation Ceremony will be part of the 33rd Annual ELSO Conference to be held in Boston, Massachusetts in September.

UCSF Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Consultation Services
CTSI’s mission is to facilitate clinical and translational research to improve patient and community health. We do this by providing infrastructure, services and training to enable research to be conducted more efficiently, effectively and in new ways.
CTSI’s Consultation Service program provides comprehensive and integrated expert consultations for every stage of research. Consultations are available for study design and implementation, biostatistics and machine learning, data extraction, data management, and participant recruitment. Study recruitment consultations and services include the EHR Recruitment service, Social Media recruitment, and consultations on strategies for recruitment of underrepresented populations. Other consultations include APeX-enabled research, community-engaged research, digital health, natural language processing (NLP), population health and health services research, practice-based research design (SFbayCRN – SF Bay Clinical Research Network), regulatory knowledge and ethics, scientific writing, and more. Visit the consultation request page for further details and self-help resources prepared by experts, covering topics such as clinical study tools and tips and online sample size calculators.
For all UCSF investigators, the first hour of consultation per project is free and subsequent hours are billed at our current rates, as approved by the UCSF Budget Office. Some consultations, such as community-engaged research, are free for the entire period. More information on billing and recharge policies can be found on our website (consult.ucsf.edu).
Visit our website (consult.ucsf.edu) to request a consultation. Consultations are scheduled on a "first come, first served" basis, so submit your request early to ensure that you can meet project deadlines. Once you submit a request, you can expect to hear from your consultant in 2-5 business days to set up next steps and schedule the first meeting, which can usually be arranged within about 2 weeks.
For information please reach out to: Marquette.goochnelson@ucsf.edu (CTSI)or Dayna.long@ucsf.edu (Dayna Long, MD, FAAP, Faculty Liaison, CTSI) as we will be happy to provide further information regarding CTSI and BCH Oakland.

Voalte for Clinical Communications at UCSF Health
(Updated 8/19/22)
| |
Now that inpatient staff (nurses, RTs, dietitians, SWs, therapists, etc.) are using Voalte, it is extremely important for all providers to be logged into Voalte and assign themselves to their appropriate role(s) (called “units” within the “Pediatric Provider BCH Oak building” in the Voalte directory). Failure to do so may lead to communication delays and patient safety issues.

Release of the UCSF Changemaker Series | |
The UCSF Changemaker Series, created by Professor of Medicine Hilary Seligman, MD, MAS, is a four-part video series that seeks to build the capacity of UCSF researchers to generate scientific evidence that is responsive to the needs of real-world decision-makers. Each 10-15 minute video highlights a UCSF researcher in conversation with an interdisciplinary panel of non-academic experts discussing how investigators at all stages of their careers can more meaningfully inform policies, systems, and structures in order to create social or policy change.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION, and
ANTI-RACISM at UCSF BCH

From Marsha J. Treadwell, PhD
DEI Co-Chair BCH Oakland
Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, UCSF School of Medicine
Jordan Fund Endowed Chair, Department of Hematology/Oncology
| |
The focus of the BCH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative is to dismantle systemic racism within BCH by taking action to insure that policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms no longer reinforce and perpetuate racial group inequity for Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color. Patients and families and other groups in the workforce, including LGBTQ+ are negatively impacted within the current problematic climate. For more information, please feel free to reach out to me, our program manager Henry Ocampo at henry.ocampo@ucsf.edu, or visit our website https://diversitybch.ucsf.edu/.
