Greetings, Community Partners –

I hope all is well with each of you. For this month, I have several exciting updates to share. Through your continued support, we are taking several steps towards the fulfillment of our college’s overall mission. Please see below.
LSC-Houston North Inaugural Commencement
Our college’s first commencement is scheduled for May 15 at 1 p.m. and will be shown on YouTube. For the 2020-2021 academic year, we are expecting 136 graduates with associate degrees or workforce certificates and an additional 51 that will be earning GEDs.

This is a milestone accomplishment for these students, but also for the college. Part of the vision for the college was for students to be able to start and finish degrees at each of our locations. Prior to Houston North, these sites were primarily supports for the larger campuses with most students only taking a few courses at each before either transferring, or in some cases, ending their educational journey. Now, we are having students graduate from a variety of programs including Human Services, Criminal Justice, Welding, HVAC, Business, as well as the general Associate of Arts degree. We hope you are able to attend our virtual commencement.
Summer and Fall Registration
Registration is now open for the summer and fall. Our goal is to have a 20% increase in enrollment during the Fall 2021 semester. If you, or someone you know, are interested in enrolling and want to know more information, please reach out to HN-Outreach@LoneStar.edu. In addition, please note that we take our students first value seriously. Therefore, we have created a series of programs and supports to assist students no matter their circumstance. Below are a few that I want to highlight.

  • Students entering college for the first time will be supported through our extensive mentoring program. Faculty or staff members will check in weekly with these students and offer support and guidance.

  •  Individuals that once attended college, but stopped for some reason can benefit from our Panther Proud program. This is a program where we will help students pay for holds/fees that may prevent re-entry into college. Contact HN-Outreach@LoneStar.edu if you want more information.

  • For working students, we have the Panther Strong program which will allow students to earn an associate degree in two years by just attending on Saturdays.

In addition, we are continuing to add new programs such as Esports and Game Design, starting this fall. For more information about the programs at LSC-Houston North, please see this link.
New Food Scholarship Program
I am excited to share that starting this fall, students enrolled in six hours at LSC-Houston North will be eligible to take part in our food scholarship program. These scholarships will allow students to “shop” twice per month for food such as meats, vegetables, fruits, and other items that can assist them and their families. This service is through a partnership with the Houston Food Bank.
Panther Pact
Lastly, I do want to express my appreciation to everyone that has contributed financially to our college. Note that 100% of donations go directly to support students through emergency funds, food/technology assistance, or tuition/textbook support. Every contribution helps. See below to see examples of how certain donations amount are used.

  • A $50 donation allow us to have groceries delivered to the homes of a student in need.
  • A $60 donation will pay for six months of Internet service for a student living in zip codes supported by the Comcast Internet Essentials program.
  • A $300 donation will cover the tuition for a student to attend on course at LSC.
  • A $1,200 donation will cover a 12 hour semester (four courses) for a student.
  • A $6,000 donation will cover the full tuition costs of a student to complete a 60 hour degree.
For more information about how you can donate to support LSC-Houston North students, please visit LSC-Houston North Panther Pact site.

As always, we appreciate each of our partners and feel honored to be able to serve the Houston North communities. We look forward to continuing to build and provide more opportunities for students to advance their economic and career opportunities.

Sincerely,
Quentin Wright, Ed.D.

Mentor Program \\ Student Testimony
“I believe it is great because my Mentor seemed genuinely concerned about how I was doing on a week to week basis in the course. She was always there for me if I had any questions or concerns. I gained her support in achieving my future plans, which she also helped me figure out.”
Did You Know?
At LSC-Houston North we put students first. Each first time in college student receives a faculty mentor to help guide them through their first year of college. Research indicates that effective mentoring is one of the most powerful relationships for influencing human behavior.

Sometimes, all a student need is someone to lend a caring ear. Just being able to speak to someone and share troubles, feelings, emotions and fears has a way of making these issues seem smaller. Our mentors are in place to provide guidance for our students and steer them in the right direction.
