- how they experience and navigate disability in their family;
- key concepts or learning moments that transformed their perceptions of disability or changed their family’s trajectory;
- what they appreciate most about their work supporting families like you; and

It’s a question we often hear with families – “How can I help prepare my child for a good start to the school year?” Our friends at Understood have some great resources to explore. Here are two we think you and your child will enjoy.

This hands-on paper chain activity engages your child in identifying their own strengths in areas like character, social skills, language, reading, math and logic, study skills, and more. All you need is paper, markers or crayons, a glue stick, and scissors. Access to a printer is helpful, but you can use the pdf as a guide and make your own strips from a fresh sheet of paper. Watch the video for step-by-step instructions!

Complete a Back to School Worksheet. This worksheet helps kids and parents capture what’s worked in the past, what was challenging, and to lay out hopes and strategies to try in the coming year. Print it out or complete it online to email it to teachers or care providers!

Calls to our Support Line in 2021-22 show that behavior-related issues at school remain a top family support need. The US Department of Education recently released new guidance and resources to help schools meet the needs of students with disabilities and avoid the discriminatory use of student discipline. The goal is to ensure that students with disabilities get the behavioral supports and special education services they need to thrive in the classroom and beyond.
