Staying on the Innovative Edge:
Resources, Networks and Model
Schools

Today, if you visit any of our local schools you will find a wide variety of innovative practices in action, and in some cases, full site transformation. This article - the third in a series focused on education innovation - looks beyond Greater Stark County to feature resources, networks and schools across the nation who are inspiring innovative education practices.

New Pedagogies for Deep Learning
New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (NPDL) partners with clusters/networks of over 1,300 schools in 7 countries, working alongside educators, to build knowledge and practices that develop deep learning and foster whole system change.  To equip students for today's complex world, NPDL teachers use Deep Learning Competencies - a "6 C's" skill set representing collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, citizenship, character and communication. Assessment - with NPDL's Deep Learning Progressions [1] - of  a student's current competency level in each of the six areas (combined with information on achievement, interests, and aspirations) gives teachers  a clear understanding of what each student needs to learn.

TED Talks
TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) is devoted to spreading ideas -usually in the form of short, powerful "TED Talks" - covering almost all topics from science, to business, to global issues. While there are many thought-provoking TED Talks, we have included two collections on education:
XQ Super Schools
In September 2015, XQ launched an open call to rethink and redesign the American high school. In an effort to help turn groundbreaking ideas into reality, XQ "offer(s) free, open source tools and materials so that every community can rethink their high schools...believ(ing) that great high schools for all are a hallmark of a great nation."  Take a look at several innovative schools recognized by XQ:
  • Big Picture Learning - Students focus on personal interests within a learning environment including  community mentors, internships, and teacher/student advisory groups.
  • DaVinci Schools - S tudents master academic content through real-world projects and gain valuable workplace skills through internships and work experience.
Additional innovative schools can be found in our white paper -   Innovation and Deep Learning: Model High Schools - on the Stark Education Partnership website.
