Winter is here with a vengeance, with January temperatures diving deep into the negatives. Environment Canada considers a temperature of -28 to -39 to be high risk, with exposed skin freezing within 10 to 30 minutes. When temperatures drop below -40, skin can freeze within 5 to 10 minutes, or faster with sustained winds. While Alberta has no specific OHS requirements for working in extreme cold, employers are still required to ensure the health and safety of their workers at their work sites and to assess and control hazards.
Make sure you're prepared for January's deep freeze with training, resources, and best practices for working in extreme cold:

For many organizations, the requirement to train all members of the HSC and the changes to HSC and HSR duties will mean that there is an urgent need to update policies and processes.
In order to help you prepare and respond to these changes, we are pleased to announce two fully revised instructor-led HSC/HSR courses to meet your training needs. Both courses will cover all legislative changes related to HSCs and HSRs, and will leave participants with a clear understanding of their roles and obligations as HSC members or HSRs.
For a brief overview of changes to HSC/HSRs requirements, AMHSA is hosting a free webinar on January 12, 2022. Please note that his webinar is not a replacement for HSC/HSR training.
