Thursday June 4 COVID-19 emergency
|
|
Today I, along with Oakville Town and Regional Councillors Pavan Parmar, Beth Robertson, Tom Adams, Marc Grant, and Jeff Knoll, many Oakville residents and MP Anita Anand, participated in a peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstration in downtown Oakville.
Sparked by the tragic murder of George Floyd last week this is one of many demonstrations Canadians are staging in solidarity against racism.
At the same time, Town Council and I also issued an
official statement against racism,
which notes that as important as it is to condemn violence and racism, we believe it will take abiding commitment to living with each other in mutual respect and cooperation to end racism and violence.
Oakville has a long history of mutual respect for all races amongst our citizens. We recognize the multitude of experiences everyone in Oakville have felt and are feeling. We are confident that Oakville will continue to live, work, and play together in peace and keep moving forward in solidarity with respect for all and responsibility for individual actions.
As we unite in our shock, anger, and grief, we know our voices can be heard by publicly expressing our feelings peacefully under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
In all we do to respect others we need to include face masks to protect others, hand washing to protect ourselves, and keeping our distance to protect each other. Together we can show all members of society they are valued and respected regardless of race.
Today marks a new point in our timeline, at the end of this email, in which we stand united during the COVID-19 emergency for a future in which our mutual respect and compassion for each other outweighs hatred and violence.

As of 11 a.m. Thursday, Ontario’s regional public health units are reporting a total of 30,841 confirmed and probable cases, including 2,371 deaths.
As of Thursday afternoon, Canada had 93,700 confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases, with 51,685 of the cases considered recovered or resolved.
According to Johns Hopkins University, which has been tracking COVID-19 cases, there are more than 6.5 million cases globally as of Thursday morning, and there have been more than 387,000 deaths.

Tam warns of 'explosive' second COVID-19 wave if reopening mishandled
|
|
Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam has issued a clear warning that Canada could see “explosive growth” in new cases if reopening is not done with caution, as the latest federal COVID-19 modelling projects that there will be more than 100,000 confirmed cases in Canada, and up to 9,400 deaths by June 15.

Oakville Trafalgar Community Centre construction update
As construction of the community centre progresses, we will keep this section updated with any new developments. Crews onsite are following COVID-19 precautions to ensure the safety of workers and the public. In the coming month activities will include:
- Installation of mechanical and plumbing grilles and fixtures
- Installation of electrical finishes including lights, receptacles and switches
- Installation of telephone lines and internet connections for pool and reception desk areas
- Pool mechanical room equipment installation
- Boarding, taping and painting of interior walls
- Interior glazing and mirrors
- Installation of doors, frames and hardware
- Installation of exterior fixtures such as metal railings and roof ladder
- Installation of washroom fixtures, partitions and benches
- Millwork completion for drink rails, countertops and backsplash
- Flooring installation completion:
- Tile for pool corridor, pool office floor, pool wall/column and deck
- Carpet tile in reception area
- Vinyl baseboards
- Wood for aerobics and gym, complete line painting and sealing
- Concrete sealing for various storage rooms and stairs
- Parking garage renovations
What to expect:
- Phasing of work for completion of finishes
- Delivery of materials and equipment
- Construction workers entering and leaving the site
- Ongoing construction activities on Saturdays
To accommodate construction, some trees have been removed, however tree replacement plans on and around the overall site identify more trees being planted than are being removed. The community centre and park sees almost 100 trees being planted and more trees will be planted as part of the seniors’ development and residential projects.
Planting of some new trees has been completed on the north side of the community centre along Macdonald Road. Tree planting/landscaping around the site will continue throughout the summer as weather conditions permit.
The site is a construction zone and will remain closed to the public.

Ontario appoints special advisor to develop health data platform
|
|
The Ontario government has appointed Dr. Jane Philpott as the special advisor to support the design and implementation of the new Ontario Health Data Platform (formerly known as PANTHR). This data platform will provide recognized researchers and health system partners with access to anonymized health data that will allow them to better detect, plan, and respond to COVID-19. As well, this platform will support projects from the
Ontario COVID-19 Rapid Research Fund
.
The Ontario Health Data Platform is being developed in consultation with the Ontario Privacy Commissioner. The information gathered will help break down long-standing barriers and allow researchers to help with:
- Increasing detection of COVID-19;
- Discovering risk factors for vulnerable populations;
- Predicting when and where outbreaks may happen;
- Evaluating how preventative and treatment measures are working; and
- Identifying where to allocate equipment and other resources.

As special advisor, Dr. Philpott will also chair the Joint Ministers' Roundtable and provide recommendations to the Minister of Health and the President of the Treasury Board. The members of the Joint Ministers' Roundtable include public health, research, privacy and clinical experts. Together, they will provide strong proactive leadership to ensure data is used in a privacy-protected way. The roundtable will participate in a consultation forum that will inform the development of the platform.

Hospital assumes management of Woodbridge Vista Care Community in Vaughan
|
|
The Ministry of Long-Term Care is appointing William Osler Health System as interim manager at Woodbridge Vista Care Community long-term care home in Vaughan, Ontario.
Despite receiving hospital support, Woodbridge Vista Care Community has been unable to contain the spread of COVID-19. These steps will enable a rigorous management structure to help contain the spread of the disease and assist in returning their home to normal operations.

Ontario creates Premier’s Council on Equality of Opportunity
|
|
Today, the Ontario government announced the Premier's Council on Equality of Opportunity, a new advisory group that will provide advice on how young people can overcome social and economic barriers and achieve success. The council will also advise government on long-term actions that can be taken to support youth during the COVID-19 outbreak.
The council will have up to 20 members, including a chair and a vice-chair. Membership will be intergenerational and cross-sector, and will include youth between the ages of 18 to 29 and adults with expertise from community organizations, not-for-profit businesses, education, and government services.
The council will focus on the challenges facing young people today, such as completing an education, skills training, and employment. As an immediate priority, the council will identify strategies to support vulnerable and marginalized youth to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Ontario government is further supporting Black communities to address the disproportionate impacts of COVID-19 by allocating $1.5 million in funding to organizations that support Black families and youth. This funding will be used to provide urgent COVID-19 supports and address the immediate needs of children, youth and families.

by Thursday, June 18, 2020. Eligible candidates should have expertise in areas such as community service, business, education, and government services such as youth justice and child welfare.

Short term rentals can resume

Today, Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, announced that short term rentals including lodges, cabins, cottages, homes, condominiums and B&Bs will be allowed to resume operations in Ontario starting Friday, June 5 at 12:01 a.m.

|
|
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that decisions regarding the reopening of restaurant patios will be made “within the week,” but it will most likely be based on a regional approach.

Seniors to receive special payment in early July
|
|
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that seniors eligible for the Old Age Security (OAS) pension and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) will receive their special one-time, tax-free payment during the week of July 6. Through this measure and others, the government is providing nearly $900 more for single seniors and more than $1,500 for senior couples, on top of their existing benefits, to help these vulnerable Canadians with extra costs during the pandemic.
Seniors eligible for the OAS pension will receive a payment of $300, and those also eligible for the GIS will receive an additional $200, for a total of $500. Allowance recipients will also receive $500. This $2.5 billion in financial support will help Canadian seniors cover increased costs caused by COVID-19, and give them greater financial security in this time of crisis.
