Grants & Assistance
You still have a week! NEH is offering grants of up to $10,000 to small or medium sized repositories that have never received an NEH grant before. These are not matching or cost-sharing grants and seem intended to pay for a professional conservator. The deadline is January 13, 2022.
These grants, due by February 1, 2022 to start in May 2022, offer up to $5,000 toward humanities projects. In 2021, the Thomas Cole National Historic Site used the $5,000 to launch three interpretive tours for group discussion and the Schenectady County Historical Society used the $5,000 to create an exhibition exploring women's fashion. Other 2021 grants to organizations like yours included an LGBTQ+ community archive, short documentaries, public lectures, and New York State History Day funding.

Happening in the Neighborhood
2022 is the Year of Glass
The United Nations declared 2022 to be the International Year of Glass, so naturally, the Corning Museum of Glass is ready to celebrate! What do you have in your collection made of glass? It lends itself to a beautiful exhibit, so prepare to sparkle and shine this year.
Yates Freedom Journey
Yates County Historical Society begins their innovative Freedom Journey virtual learning event on February 2. Using the story of John Thomas, who escaped slavery in Virginia in 1835 and settled in Penn Yan, they're asking you to follow his trail by any mode: walking, running, biking, driving, etc. Check out the project and tell your history-minded, active friends: Yates Freedom Journey: 300 Miles of History.
COVID Safe and Online
Fenimore Art Museum has planned a great slate of online tours this winter with live Q&A while they're closed for the winter season. They reopen on April 1.

History at Home Learning
The History Center in Tompkins County has compiled all of their pandemic-prompted virtual and asynchronous programs in one attractive, tidy webpage, called History at Home. It's a great resource for parents and very impressive to see all together.
Oneonta Renovations
After 15 or more years with the same permanent exhibit, the Greater Oneonta Historical Society is refreshing its street-level space with "Small Community, Big Ideas: Greater Oneonta." We look forward to seeing it in a few months!
A Year in Review in Chemung County
The curator, archivist and education director at the Chemung County Historical Society each put a lot of work into writing fabulous blog posts about Elmira history, found here. I really liked how they approached the blog at the end of the year, because besides listing the five most popular posts of the year (always a good idea), they also highlighted a few they thought deserved more attention.
Bicentennial for Big Flats
This year marks the 200th birthday of Big Flats in Chemung County. At the town's 150th birthday party in 1972, the local Women's Club presented a large check to the brand-new historical society toward their building fund. They'd also won a large America the Beautiful grant. The society printed hundreds of cookbooks and commemorative books to sell as a fundraiser following their June 21st town reunion. It was going great! ...Then two days later, the floods of Hurricane Agnes came and tragically washed it all away. I can't wait to see what exhibits and events the Big Flats Historical Society has planned for their bicentennial celebrations, but let's all keep an eye on the weather together- just in case.

Teamwork and Crowdsourcing for Identification

Do you have a great story of using social media to identify pieces from your collection? Let me know! It's my favorite way to encourage digitization and outreach for small organizations.

Digital Equity Portal
In case you missed the NYLINE announcements, the New York State Library and others just launched the NYS Digital Equity Portal: an interactive map chock full of useful data for you to parse when doing strategic planning or grant writing. Find it here and be sure to check the " Explore More Map Layers" tab.
Happy Public Domain Day!
On January 1, 2022, copyrighted works from 1926 entered the public domain where they will be free for all to copy, share, and build upon. This year, pre-1923 sound recordings will also be added to the public domain! See a list of new additions here, and consider what you might have in your own collections.
