STAFF NOTES
FROM REV. KELLIE...
My Dear Ones,

So much has happened since we last worshiped together March 8th—the COVID-19 Pandemic, record-breaking unemployment, and worldwide protests against American police violence and anti-blackness. Each of these amazing and possibly once-in-a lifetime phenomena are not one-time events; we continue to watch them evolve and affect our daily lives. It can be hard to maintain our spirits and bodies when caught in times of great tumult—whether we are suffering ourselves or feeling guilty for not suffering as much as our siblings—exhausted and burnt-out or detached and numb. At times like this we need each other more than ever.

I’m writing to you from my second week away from MVUUF. Last week, I attended our association’s first completely-virtual General Assembly, often called GA by attendees (this annual meeting is where and when UUs gather to learn and make decisions together). This week, I am on study leave, organizing, planning, and reading. Although I have still been “working,” I have been spending more “fun” time with my son and husband, sleeping late, and trying to rest both my mind and body. You might remember that I describe myself as only having 2 speeds: 70 miles per hour (mph) in a 50 mph zone or 0 mph, ha! I’m still working on finding a few more speeds so that I can create better work/life balance. I hope you all are able to carve out time for yourselves too this summer, especially in this new COVID world.

Typically, the month after our congregational meeting, I use my congregational report as my Forum column (since we only send our report to our 150+ members and our Forum newsletter goes to 400 individuals). Because it feels like everything this summer is atypical, I want to share a few more things with you first (you’ll still find my June 2020 congregational letter after my reading list).

As temperatures rose and school ended, I noticed more people in my neighborhood welcoming visitors to their homes and having small, outdoor get-togethers. Of course, I shouldn’t have been surprised—when I go out to run errands, I am usually surrounded by unmasked customers and improperly masked employees (with their noses unmasked). Instead, what surprised me was my own personal resolve weakening: maybe I was being overly cautious. Peer pressure/herd mentality was chipping away at my caution and resolve. So I asked our Board to consider the option of inviting small groups to gather outdoors with both physical distancing and masks, without any food or drink that would require removing masks.
At our June 20 Board meeting, the MVUUF Board discussed my suggestion at length and decided it is still not as safe or as inclusive as we feel necessary for our MVUUF events, meetings, or groups. Although some data seems to show that fewer cases occur outdoors and/or when all parties wear masks, the Board believes that it is still too early to truly tell. We also know that outdoor meetings are not accessible to some individuals with mobility challenges or medical conditions. Now almost 2 weeks later, COVID cases are rising at an alarming rate again in our local area and nationally, which obviously reinforces our decision.

Even though this decision makes no change to our current COVID policy, I am sharing it with you because I want you to know that we (your minister, staff, and Board) also are struggling without being able to gather in-person. Personally, I struggled greatly with the decision to attend public rallies/protests after George Floyd’s death. I understood that my attendance of these protests might give a mixed message to the congregation. Ultimately, I decided that Black lives and my own husband’s lack of safety in our Centerville neighborhood outweighed my health risks and the potential mixed messages my attendance of those protests sent. This new COVID world is complicated.
In order to improve how we gather virtually, Garlene Hamilton will be offering several trainings this summer to teach congregants how to use Zoom as either participants or hosts. Please consider attending at least one of these trainings, even if you feel like you’ve done fine so far. We all can use this extra training and support. We are also investigating other technology platforms to replace or use in addition to what we’re currently using. If you’re interested in helping or have any specific suggestions, please let me know.

I return to MVUUF (virtually) Wednesday, July 7th. Hope to see you at my Zoom Coffee with the Minister on Thursday, July 8th at 10:30 AM!

Holding you in my heart,
Rev. Kellie

June 2020 Congregational Report
Letter from the Minister

My Dear Ones,
Here we are—closing out our second year of shared ministry. As I have said before, I can’t believe that we have only been together for two years! So much has happened during our time together—in the fellowship, in the larger Dayton community, nationally, and in our own personal lives.

We have weathered so much together and come through stronger: an endowment fund withdrawal, four burglaries within two months’ time, the Memorial Day tornadoes, the Oregon District Tragedy, the deaths of three of our longtime and beloved MVUUF members, the once-in-a-century COVID-19 Pandemic, costly building repairs, the highest unemployment rate since the Great Depression, and now a wave of demonstrations protesting racist and deadly police practices against our black siblings and the government’s use of force to stop these protests.

Meanwhile, we also have had personal joys and sorrows to celebrate and mourn: births, deaths, graduations, disappointments, divorces, accidents, new relationships, illnesses, retirements, marriages, and career changes. Together, we are holding a great deal. I am grateful that we have one another during both the good and difficult times. I am honored to share this ministry with you, to learn with you and from you.

COVID-19 Ministry
While I have tried to continue working on my early ministry goals of learning the fellowship’s culture and strengthening MVUUF’s health through existing and new programming, I must admit that addressing the COVID- 19 Pandemic has taken up the bulk of my time and energies since our semi-annual congregational meeting in January. As you all know first-hand, COVID-19 has stopped many aspects of our fellowship life: in-person worship and singing, in-person gathering, many of our service auction events, and our Peace Hero Walk in downtown Dayton. Although it is painful not to be with one another in-person, we believe it is our responsibility to put our congregants’ safety and the public good above our own desire to gather.

Yet, we have found new ways to come together, which have strengthened and expanded many of our connections. In an effort to connect with more congregants personally, I changed my monthly Coffee with the Minister to a weekly event. Our phone tree has contacted every MVUUF member and active friend and is continuing to reach out periodically to ensure our congregants are remaining healthy and connected to our community. In order to better support our congregants, our food pantry coordinator has delivered food to several congregants from both our food pantry and area grocery stores. We have set up a meal train to help one of our families who had three family members with COVID-19. Finally, a group of volunteers have delivered hand-made masks to our congregants at higher risk for complications with the virus. We have held one another with incredible compassion and love.

We have moved many of our meetings, groups, and activities online using Zoom video and telephone conferencing. I hope that we are able to continue using this technology even once we begin to gather in-person. For example, prior to COVID-19, our minister’s group met in person monthly to support one another and connected to Dan Miyake via Zoom while he was in New York for his congregational internship. This hybrid approach of in-person AND Zoom allows more people to connect, especially when the weather makes travel unsafe or someone isn’t feeling well.

By live-streaming our Sunday worship services, we are reaching more congregants and visitors than ever before. When we begin worshipping in-person again, we definitely will continue to live-stream our services. We also have added a new mid-week worship service called Worship for the Weary, which is a 30-minute mixture of reflective readings, music, and silence. We hope to get these worship services, sermons, and Stories for All Ages on our own YouTube channel. Keep a lookout for this new development (and let me know if you’d like to help)!

Our social action committee continues to be very active, despite the safety restrictions COVID-19 requires. Our food justice team continues to provide lunch for St. Vincent’s homeless ministry once a month. Our immigration team is delivering groceries weekly to families unable to access government support programs. Our social action committee drafted a public statement against the murder of George Floyd by police. We have several members who have been attending local protests and we held a discussion about the protests, police violence and anti- blackness. We know that we must keep this work going after the world moves on to the next headline. If you are interested in participating in more anti-racism discussions and/or programming, please let me know.

In Gratitude
Despite having to cancel our May 16 Peace Heroes Walk in downtown Dayton due to COVID-19, we have been able to keep this important peace literacy project alive by transforming it into the first-ever Peace Heroes Meditative Trail. This is important for two reasons: 1.) teaching peace literacy is too important to be put on hold until we can safely gather in-person 2.) the MVUUF budget we passed last year relies on this fundraiser to supply $25,000 of our current operating expenses. This means we need to raise our funds by June 21. Personally, I am thrilled that we will be providing an enduring peace literacy exhibit on our MVUUF grounds and on the world- wide web. I know we can do it!
Speaking of us being awesome, we have had a SECOND hugely successful pledge drive this year, $15,000 higher than last year. Congratulations—you all are amazing! Your generous pledges allow us to employ a phenomenal staff (if I may say so myself, hehe): a full-time minister, a three-quarters time administrator who has been with us almost 7 years, a new half-time Director of Religious Education who grew up in our fellowship, a 13- hour/week Director of Music who is one of our former lay leaders, and a new 7-hour/month bookkeeper who is also a former MVUUF lay leader. We are not only surviving—we are thriving.

While I cannot predict what life will be like over this next year, I do know that we have a few important things that we can count on. I am grateful that we will weather the storms and celebrate the joys together. I am grateful that physical distance cannot separate us. I am grateful that we will continue to work to make the world a place where every human being can thrive. Most of all, I am grateful to see how Love transforms us.
A MINUTE FOR MUSIC
We are all adapting to news ways of life that were hardly imaginable just four months ago. Besides the practical matters of social distancing, wearing face coverings, and limiting outings, there are so many changes to how we are in relationship. I have recognized in myself a real sadness for the lost physical contact with friends and the incomplete experience of communicating with our congregation only virtually on a screen. So we are going to try and “ make lemonade from these lemons ” and create some simple fun to entertain ourselves and each other.

Announcing our 1st ever, Virtual Talent Night for all ages on: Friday, July 31st, starting at 7:30 PM on (of course) Zoom! Everyone is invited to think of a talent they can share; visual art works, spoken word, dance, impressions, comedy, lip-sync or karaoke etc. Being in our own homes, there are even more possibilities (think “costumes.”) Families are encouraged to come up with an act. Let’s get creative and have some fun together!

ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTES
For the first time in my 6.75 years as MVUUF's Administrator, I will actually be taking a full week of vacation this month!

While COVID-19 has made sure we won't be travelling to any tropical locales, I will be enjoying some rest & relaxation the week of July 13th through 17th.

Will I spend my free time lounging around my pond watching wildlife? Locked in my art room creating masterpieces? Or hanging out with my favorite "tiny human" (my grandson Isaac)? Who knows? But whatever it is I end up doing, I'm sure it will be fun & relaxing!

SHOWING UP FOR JUSTICE
ANTI-RACIST MOVIES IN JULY VIA ZOOM
Fridays & Saturdays in July, 7:00 PM, on Zoom
Friday, July 3rd 13th
Friday, July 10th Just Mercy
Saturday, July 18th To be determined
Saturday, July 25th To be determined

Our Social Justice Committee is offering four different movies this month that focus on anti-racism, and the movies can be watched in the comfort of your home (or wherever you choose) because you'll watch them on Zoom!
The first movie offered is 13th , an in-depth look at the prison system in the United States and how it reveals the nation's history of racial inequality. Even after the passage of the 13th Amendment, persons who were formerly enslaved were not really free. What better way to learn and honor "Independence Day." Independence for whom? This film by acclaimed director Ava DuVernay is powerful and enlightening, and there will be a discussion following the film.

The movie will be shown on Friday, July 3rd, beginning at 7:00 PM (the Zoom room will be closed at 7:15 PM, so please be prompt). The information to join this Zoom event can be found below:

ST. VINCENT de PAUL LUNCH
Saturday, July 11th, 10:15 AM
St. Vincent’s lunch on Saturday, July 11th:  Thanks to nine members who in June provided menu items for St. Vincent’s in larger-than-usual batches (25--50 servings)!

In July we continue with the COVID-19 plan we began in April: We ask MVUUF members and friends to provide beef or ground turkey sloppy joe sandwich filling,  salad and fresh fruit, and to deliver or arrange with Lynn Buffington for pick up.  For COVID safety we deliver to the outside door at St. Vincent's and the hard working St. Vincent's staff will serve the meal.

Please check SignUp Genius for how you might help and please pay careful attention to the labeling instructions.  Note we drop off the main dish cold on Fridays and other items by 10:15 am on Saturday morning.

Because of the expense of large “batches,” we are reimbursing cooks and shoppers for ingredients, and we accept financial donations for this purpose.  You may donate by sending a check made out to MVUUF with memo line "St. Vincent's." Please mail to 8690 Yankee St, Dayton 45458. Because MVUUF still needs our funds for operating expenses, now more than ever, please only donate for St. Vincent's if you are able to also continue to contribute to MVUUF operating expenses. You can contact Lynn with questions, including about reimbursement process, and suggestions:   ABUFFLG@Gmail.com , cell: 937-657-0426 .

ANTI-RACISM ALLY GROUP
Thursday, July 30th 7:00 PM on Zoom
There has been a lot of turmoil around racism in our country, state and city. Are you a white person with questions, ideas, concerns or just want a place to have discussions about what is going on?

Then please join our Anti-Racism Ally group on Thursday, July 30th at 7:00 PM. Co-Leaders, Kristen Beireis and Bill Ross have revamped the group a little; each meeting will allow for learning, actively practicing being allies, open discussion, and creating actions we can take to follow and support Black, Indigenous and all People of Color (BIPOC) in our congregation as well as residents in the larger community. While this month's gathering happens on the 5th Thursday of the month, in August it will go back to it's usual date of the 4th Thursday evening of the month.

If you have questions or would like to provide input before our first meeting, you are welcome to contact Bill at  rossviva@hotmail.com  or Kristen at  KristenBeireis@gmail.com

BOOK DRIVE FOR WESTWOOD SCHOOL and
WESLEY COMMUNITY CENTER
Coming This August!
Help support two of our partners serving the West Dayton community.

Westwood PreK-6 School : At the Book Drive last August we collected hundreds of new and used children’s books for Westwood students. We delivered over 100 of the books directly to Principal Shelley Murphy and we used the rest to stock the “little library” (pictured above)at Westwood’s main entrance from Sep-Mar. This year, with the fellowship building closed, our book drive will be a bit more challenging, but we still want to collect as many books as we can for the kids at Westwood.
Wesley Community Center : In a new initiative this year our West Dayton Action Group is creating “Little Literacy Kits” for the Wesley Center’s Baby Ready Program. Each kit (shown below) contains three baby books, information on the importance of reading with your child, and a registration form for a national program that sends free books to kids. Our goal is to provide a kit to every mom in the Baby Ready Program, which is about 75 per year.

How to help:

1. Donate books - Purchase new books or donate used books in good condition that you no longer need. Books for Westwood should be suitable for ages 4-12. Books for the Wesley Center should be small board books suitable for babies and toddlers. When your books are ready contact Steve Steel to arrange a safe, no-contact pickup.

2. Donate money - Mail a check to the fellowship made out to MVUUF with “book drive” in the memo line, or donate online on the MVUUF fundraising page (a link for the book drive under “other fundraising” will be coming in August). All monetary donations will be used to purchase discounted books at the Firstbook website from their “African American Characters and Cultures” section.

Contact Steve Steel at 937-304-4087 or  steel.steven@yahoo.com  for more information and get ready to support this important project to benefit our West Dayton neighbors.
AROUND THE FELLOWSHIP
UNSUNG HERO
currently at MVUUF
At its June meeting, the Program Council (PC) recognized Maury Wyckoff as an MVUUF Unsung Hero!

You probably recognize Maury as our previous MVUUF Board President who provided guidance and stability during particularly difficult ministerial transitions . While his two-year service as President was an enormous responsibility and time commitment, Maury has been a long-time supporter of a wide variety of Fellowship efforts in a quiet and unassuming way. He was part of the team that researched acquiring space for our current building and was instrumental in the development and construction of our building and property site. He is actively participating in our Peace Heroes project, served as a member of the nominating committee and quietly takes care of our building and property. It’s not unusual to find him up on our roof or on a tall ladder checking or repairing something. If you happen to pass by the building at odd times, you might find him trimming, transplanting or just taking care of our landscape. Maury is one of our life-long UUs who exemplifies our 7 th principle: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part .
JOIN OUR TECH TEAM!
currently needed for Sunday Worship Services
Have you been watching services and wondering what is going on behind the scenes to make it happen? Do you enjoy hosting online meetings?

The Production Team needs at least 6 more people - more is even better - to make our Sunday services run smoothly. We have broken the roles down into 4 small chunks of work so each of us can still enjoy the service while we volunteer behind the scenes.

  • Host: Starts the meetings, makes others co-hosts, records the session, and live streams to Facebook.
  • Presentation Co-host: Shares slides and videos.
  • Participant Co-host: Spotlights the active speaker, controls Mute/Unmute, and manages the Chat panel.
  • Usher: Admits people to the meeting and greets them.

You do not need to know how to host Zoom meetings. We will teach you! If you have a stable internet connection, a cell phone, and a desire to learn some tech stuff, email me at  SoGarlene@gmail.com.
ZOOM TRAINING FOR EVERYONE!
currently being offered by Garlene Hamilton
I have been so impressed with our ability to quickly switch to virtual Sunday services! With about 20 years of experience in virtual and online learning, trust me when I say you are doing great! The biggest obstacle I have seen in my career is the reluctance to even give it a try. You all jumped right in and our virtual services are the better for it!

Now that we have all gotten comfortable clicking the link and joining from our homes, it is a perfect time to rewind a bit and fill in some foundational information and skills to make your virtual experience even better. I will be offering two sessions of Zoom Participant Training this month. Even if you have been joining and doing fine, please consider joining me for an hour to build your skills and confidence. You will learn tricks with audio and video, participants panel and chat; how to show the speaker and slide in side by side view; how to move between speaker, gallery, and full screen views and when each is best; and you can ask questions that you may have been wondering about over the past few months.
Participant Training: (attend one session)
  • Saturday, July 11th @ 3:00 PM
  • Monday, July 13th @ 7:00 PM

In addition, I will be offering a 2-part Zoom Host/Co-host training. This is for anyone who needs to host or co-host in Zoom for any meetings and anyone who may be thinking you might want to volunteer to help with Sunday services.
Host/Co-host Training: (attend both sessions)
  • Part 1: Tuesday, July 14th, 6:30-8:00 PM
  • Part 2: Friday, July 17th, 6:30-8:00 PM

RSVP to  SoGarlene@gmail.com  if you plan to attend the Host/Co-host training and if you are considering volunteering on the Production Team for Sunday Services.
