Day 75: Notebooks That Change The World

Wherever schools are needed around the world
Facts:
According to UNESCO the number of boys and girls who are denied access to education is more than 264 million. As many as one third of these children live in fragile countries or in conflict zones.
Right now, only 83 percent of the children who go to school complete elementary school, and just 45 percent of students aged 15 to 17 will finish secondary school.
Many girls, especially in developing countries, can't go to school at all. Only 66 percent of countries have reached gender parity in access to elementary education.
Art Form: Notebooks that Support Artists and Build Schools
The idea for the Denik brand began when the founder, Tyler Tolson, was told that one of his drawings would look awesome on a notebook. Growing up he had been told that he shouldn't pursue art as a career. Seeing an opportunity to build a brand around creative, cause-based notebooks, he and his co-founder, Jake, gathered up a team of college students at Utah State University and set out to create change.
They started gathering artists and designing and binding notebooks. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each item was set aside to fund building schools in communities around the world.
More than 30 artists have contributed their artwork to Denik designs. The artwork on each notebook can be geometric, an illustration, photography, pop art, watercolors, or even surrealist images. The notebooks we carry at World's Window are 8.5" x 11" with soft bindings and paper suitable for writing or sketching, or whatever strikes your fancy!

Since 2011, Denik Designs' vision has blossomed from a grass-roots street team of book-slingers to a community of artists and creative professionals. The mission of funding education projects through art and creativity has spread to artists, customers, corporations and partners worldwide. The Denik movement has successfully funded 5 schools to date -two in Mali, one each in Guatemala, Laos and Ghana.
ART CAN CHANGE THE WORLD
Mali, Guatemala, Laos, Ghana
Mali - In 2015, the first school became possible with the help of their partner Mali Rising. In partnership with the villagers of Zambougou, they built a school accessible to this rural and remote community.
In 2017, they also partnered with the villagers of Sebela, Mali to build a school that provides a safe place to learn and grow for 150 children.
Meet Boubacar, a math loving little boy from Zambougou who sees his education as opening up a whole new future for himself. "When I grow up, I want to become a math teacher to transmit my knowledge to a lot of children, especially those from my village."
Guatemala - Denik Designs teamed up with Pencils of Promise and built a school in 2017. With 3 new classrooms, the school can serve hundreds of children.
Meet friends Henry and Douglas. They met in first grade at Linea A-13 school. Until their new school was built they had to learn outdoors where it was often too hot or too wet to focus. Now they and hundreds of other children can learn within the comfort of 4 walls without challenging distractions.
Laos - Partnering with Pencils of Promise Denik built a school in Mok Chong, Laos. Together they responded to the needs of the community and broke ground on a new 5-classroom primary and preschool. Construction is complete and school is in session for 588 students!

Ghana - Once again in partnership with Pencils of Promise, the 5th school was built in Bukarikope, Ghana in 2018. Denik is honored and excited to be able to continue to provide a safe place for students all over the world to learn!

Happy 4th of July! On this day of celebration, we are pleased to shine a spotlight on Denik notebooks and their goal of continuing to build schools through the hands of artists.
My hope is that we continue to call forth and listen to the wisdom and knowledge of courageous, critical thinkers to help heal our country and our world.
Our online store is, of course, open 24 hours a day. Our Brookside store is CLOSED today (Saturday) for the 4th of July, and will be open on Sunday.
