Or Shalom At Home

It's week 6 of our online photo feature, Or Shalom At Home. Home is where we all are these days, and since we can't see each other in person, we're sharing photos. Each week the newsletter will feature a photo of one member/member family sheltering in place or venturing outside. Eventually we will create an album on the Or Shalom website documenting how our community waited out the pandemic.

We invite you to submit a photo, along with any message or caption,  to Lillian. Photos can be funny, poignant, exasperated--however you are feeling. Please identify everyone in the picture (you can use first names only if you like). By sending in a photo, you consent to have the photo, your names, and any message you have written displayed in the newsletter and on the public website.
Friday Nights at 7:00 Or Shalom Welcomes Shabbat

Every Friday night at 7:00 Or Shalom will be on-line, either with a short series of blessings led by a community member, or with a full Shabbat service.

On June 5 Rabbi Katie and Mikey will lead a Kabbalat Shabbat Service.
On June 12 join Rabbi Me'irah for Shabbat blessings. Candles, kiddush, hamotze, songs; a chance to greet each other and
welcome the Sabbath Bride.
On June 19, our Kabbalat Shabbat Service will be led by Rabbi Katie,  Saralie Pennington, and Tom Herz.

These services will last until about 8:30. They are a wonderful opportunity to strengthen your soul with song and community.  ( To minimize screen-sharing during services, please download and print our updated Zoominyan Siddur, found here.)

Both Shabbat blessings and Shabbat services share a Zoom link:

Natasha MarMinoff, daughter of Julie Minoff and Glenn Mar, will become a bat mitzvah at Shabbat services on Saturday morning, June 13.

The community is invited to join the Facebook live-stream at 10:00 to observe Shabbat, celebrate with the Mar-Minoff family, and welcome Tasha as an adult member of our community.

Safety Net Action Committee Meeting
Monday, June 15, 7 pm via Zoom

The next meeting of the Safety Net Action Committee is on Monday 9/15.  SNAC works to advance the movement to ensure affordable and accessible healthcare for all. We see this as a moral and ethical issue as well as a public health issue.

Participation is by Zoom invitation, so if you are interested in participating, contact Betsy Stausberg .
Newsminyan: Racial Justice and Teshuvah
Sunday, June 14, 4:00-5:30 via Zoom

Gather online with our community to discuss racial justice and teshuvah (repentance) using the tools of our newsminyan practice - deep listening and expression, text study and dialogue.

Please register in advance so that we can plan and send out materials and a zoom link ahead of time to participants.
OS Coffee Hour - Discontinued

We are discontinuing the Wednesday morning coffee hour with Rabbi Katie. She will be looking for new ways to connect with the community and help us connect with one another. Stay tuned.

Introducing the Or Shalom Virtual Cooking Show

Many of us have been spending our at-home time cooking and/or watching cooking shows. The next step is obvious: the Or Shalom Virtual Cooking Show, featuring our members and their favorite vegetarian dishes.

We invite Or Shalom cooks to send us a 10-20 minute cooking video demonstrating and explaining a favorite recipe. We will put the best of them on an Or Shalom streaming platform and announce "What's Cookin'" in the Newsletter.

Episode 1:  Rabbi Me'irah's "Bulgarian Yogurt Soup." Find her video demonstration on YouTube, right here.

Do you have a recipe to share? Contact Bryna with your recipe idea (vegetarian, or kosher fish dish). She will email an instruction sheet to guide you in making and submitting the video (thanks to Glenn Mar for technical help!). YouTube stardom awaits!

Brought to you by the producers of the OS/VCS: Bryna Rifkind, Miriam Lewis, Glenn Mar, and Sue Schechter.

Please note that we had an incorrect email address for Bryna in previous newsletters.  Please resend your video to her at brynabr@gmail.com.

Bet Sefer - 6th Grade Drash Workshop
Wednesday, June 10, 4:00 via Zoom

Bet Sefer parents: please respond to the survey about you and your child's experiences this past year. Your honest responses will help us plan for the 2020-21 Bet Sefer, Teen Havurah, and Sing Shalom programs.
OS Virtual Bulletin Board on Facebook

Connect to fellow Or Shalom Members directly online to offer support, ask for assistance, and share resources.  Advertise your business. Tell the community about the services you offer. Post your insights, share a photo from your quarantine adventure, show us what you are cooking, or ask the Or Shalom hive mind for help with a problem you're having.

  Sign up here
and then post away!  (This board is private to Or Shalom members.)
Social Action Corner

If ever there was a week for social action! Here are some opportunities to "pray with your mouse:"

Poor People's Campaign Mass Assembly
The Poor People's Campaign will hold the largest digital and social media gathering of poor and low-wealth people, moral and religious leaders, advocates, and people of conscience in this nation's history. RSVP or volunteer here.

NAACP We Are Done Dying Campaign
As the world faces unprecedented times and new realities during this global pandemic, and as incidents of hate and domestic terrorism lead to the brutalization of African-Americans, the health and safety of African-American people are at an unparalleled risk. Support the NAACP's effort to get justice for George Floyd, enact criminal justice reform, and protect voters' rights. More here.
