Dear Friends of The Blue Purl,

It is the kind of thing easily overlooked -- and for years it was. It was just a small cotton sack, worn and tattered, and it ended up in a box of other scraps at a Nashville flea market, where it lay unnoticed until someone chanced upon it and took a moment to read the words embroidered on the front.

My great grandmother Rose
mother of Ashley gave her this sack when
she was sold at age 9 in South Carolina
it held a tattered dress 3 handfulls of
pecans a braid of Roses hair. Told her
It be filled with my Love always
she never saw her again
Ashley is my grandmother
Ruth Middleton
1921

This sack, which was displayed in the Smithsonan, inspired the historian Tiya Miles to write “All that She Carried, The Journey of Ashley’s Sack”. It's a story of enslavement, love, survival, and histories.

Most people move towards the loudest noise and look up at the brightest flash. Most people follow the crowd, cheer for the touchdown, jump up and down as the music blares.

You are not most people. You all see the value in the quiet, meditative arts of knitting and crochet. You know that a sweater or blanket made by a loved one carries deep meaning, even if there is no one cheering for it.

We at The Blue Purl want to begin the New Year by asking, what is your cotton sack? What article, trinket, button, needle, do you cherish because it carries a story of past lives and future hopes? What inspires you, quietly? Do you have a blanket that your mother made? A pair of socks from a great aunt? Is there one item that survived a long journey and was passed down to you?

For Tiya Miles, it was a tattered bag that was her inspiration. What is it for you?

In our continuing effort to build community, we are asking for your stories that tie you and the past together. Please send photos and a brief description to our email: info@thebluepurl.com.
