October-November 2020
Something special has been happening in North York that is making a world of difference to individuals and families in our community. North York General Hospital (NYGH) has one of Toronto's most comprehensive community palliative care programs. Now, with Dr. Sandy Buchman as the inaugural Freeman Family Chair in Palliative Care and new Medical Director of NYGH's Freeman Centre for the Advancement of Palliative Care, we are further expanding access to palliative care in people’s communities and homes.
Responding to community needs during the pandemic
In early November, the Ontario Government announced more than $3.5 million for North York General to support 40 transitional care beds and two critical care beds. The transitional care beds are located in a local retirement home with Bayshore Home Health providing nursing and other health professional support to meet residents’ needs.

At the best of times, mental health conditions and addictions can be difficult to manage, without the added pressures of COVID-19. The pandemic’s toll on people’s mental health is increasingly being viewed as a crisis within a crisis.

As a major provider of services for mental health and addictions, North York General has adapted – seemingly overnight – to new approaches to support people through a tumultuous time.
Taking Stock and Celebrating or Successes
With all that we have experienced these past months, there has been little time to catch our breath let alone take stock. However, North York General has done just that with two new reports to keep our community and partners informed about our shared accomplishments, challenges and opportunities.
