Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tom Ricks will discuss his mega-best-selling new book, First Principles: What America's Founders Learned from the Greeks and Romans and How That Shaped Our Country, in which he offers lessons for our fraught political moment. "Ricks," writes Virgina DeJohn Anderson in the New York Times, "urges Americans to fix their government so that it protects citizens from the inevitable lapses of a fallible people and, perhaps, even more fallible leaders.” A former military correspondent for the Washington Post, Ricks is also the author of "Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2003-04"; and "The Generals: American Military Command from World War II to Today."

The Trailblazer Awards is an annual event sponsored by Westchester County Executive George Latimer, the African American Advisory Board, and the County Board of Legislators, that honors the accomplishments of local citizens of African descent. This year's honorees will include Mayor Shawn Patterson-Howard, Dr. Glenn A. Davis, Mr. Olney Reynolds, and Dr. Philip Ozuah. In addition, Dr. Larry Spruill will give a special presentation. The event will be streamed live on Facebook.

JHC Welcomes New Trustee, Aileen Burdick
JHC is thrilled to announce its newest trustee, Aileen Burdick! Since leaving Wall Street for motherhood, Aileen has held various volunteer positions at Milton School and Rye Country Day School as well as the Rye Free Reading Room Auxiliary. She has also served as a PREP teacher at Resurrection Church, and currently serves on the Board of the Food & Environment Reporting Network (FERN), an independent, nonprofit news organization that produces award-winning, high-impact investigative and explanatory reporting on food, agriculture, and environmental health.

Dr. Gretchen Sorin, the professor and critically acclaimed author of "Driving While Black: African American Travel and the Road to Civil Rights," joined us last Thursday for a conversation with Suzanne Clary, president of JHC's Board of Trustees. Her talk, she explained, focused on "how important the automobile has been in African American history and life."
