The Fifth Sunday
in Lent
John 12:20-33

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.

“Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry Will Address the
Williamstown Virtual Forum
on Christian Nationalism
Thursday, March 18, 7:00 p.m.

On January 6, 2021, a mob of insurrectionists stormed the Capitol Buildingin the name of Jesus. As some committed violent acts of destruction that led to grave personal injury, many carried crosses, signs and flags bearing the name of Jesus and quoting Holy Scripture. People of faith are rejecting this singular misuse of the Gospel and the larger insidious phenomenon of Christian Nationalism.

We invite you to join ecumenical leaders for a virtual forum,“Christian Nationalism: How It Harms Us All -an Interfaith Discussion”, sponsored by The First Congregational Church of Williamstown, United Church of Christ.

Panelists: Imam Bilal Ansari, Faculty Associate of Pastoral Theology, Director of the Islamic Chaplaincy Program at Hartford Seminary

Rev. Dr. John C. Dorhauer, General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ
Rev. Sheila D. Sholes-Ross, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Pittsfield
Rabbi Pamela Wax, Spiritual Care Coordinator at Westchester Jewish Community Services, White Plains, NY

There are photos and videos and stories about us and life in the Berkshires which you may not know if you are new to Grace and the area.

The Profile Committee thanks you for your steadfast prayers for us and asks your prayers for the Search Committee and the priest who is reading our profile.

Prayer for the Search Committee
O God, be with our Search Committee that they may faithfully complete their work, that your Kingdom may come into this time and place through this congregation.

Prayer for the Priest
O God, be with the priest who will recognize your call to walk with
this particular congregation in this particular year.

Pray with Us Daily:

God of abundance and wisdom, you have blessed Grace Church with love and respect for one another and with joy in our community. Help us to discern your will and to be open to your guidance as we seek a new rector for our parish. Grant us the ability to hear your voice as we listen to one another. Give us wisdom and patience, mutual respect, and clarity of vision, that we may choose and receive a priest who serves with warmth and humor, inspiration and faithfulness, and who will lead us where you are calling Grace Church to serve the mission of Jesus in this time and place. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
PRAYERS AND CARES

CHANGE IN PRAYER LIST IN MARCH

Praying for each other and for the needs of the world is a vital part of any faith community, and Grace Church is particularly skilled at this aspect of our communal life. During this time of transition, it’s become apparent that we need to make a few changes in our lengthy prayer list to create a more intentional system of maintaining it. On March 15, the list of “Members of the Parish Family” and “Others We Love” for whom we pray will reset to zero and we’ll begin a fresh new list. We don’t want anyone to fall through the cracks and always want to be generous in our prayers for others.

You can help by sending an e-mail to ([email protected]) if you want a person whose name is currently on the list to stay on the list beyond March 1 or if you want to add someone who isn’t currently on the list. Libby will then keep a record of the date the name was added along with who added it and either she or a member of the Healing Team will periodically call you to check on how that person is doing and if their situation has improved enough to come off the list. We can then give thanks. In this way our prayers can be both generous and more focused

Meet Our Transitional Deacons

The transitional diaconate is a period of not less than six months in preparation for ordination to the priesthood (CANON III.8.7).

Peter Feltman-Mahan has roots in the Capital region of New York and is trained as a classroom teacher, school psychologist, and school leader. As a young adult, Peter was active in the ministries of the Metropolitan Community Church in San Francisco, CA. This is also where he experienced God’s profound presence in liturgical worship.

Peter returned to the northeast and was confirmed at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Albany. While teaching, he discerned the need to more deeply engage the scriptures and church history. Peter began attending Yale Divinity Schools in 2015 and completed an internship at St. Andrews Church in Albany, NY.

Peter found “home” in the Diocese of Western Massachusetts, and particularly at his sponsoring parish, Grace Church in the Southern Berkshires. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Yale Divinity School and a Diploma in Anglican Studies from Berkeley Divinity School in 2020. As a seminarian Peter has served at Trinity Church, Lenox since 2020.

Peter and his husband Keith Feltman were married in 2000, and again (a week after the Supreme Court ruling) in 2013. They have three teenage sons, Micah, Lucas, and Noah, and are grateful for both human and divine adoption. Peter is interested in ministries that build community, deepen our care for each other, and celebrate God’s presence in our everyday interactions.

After ordination Peter will be assigned to a congregation to be mentored and formed by the community.

If you would like to send a congratulatory note or card to Peter, his address is
60 Rowland Dr.,
Delmar, NY 12054.
Anna Woofenden is originally from Washington state and currently lives in Northampton MA. St. John’s Episcopal Church, Northampton is her sponsoring parish. (Anna was strongly supported by St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal in San Francisco, where she started her journey with The Episcopal Church).

She is the Transition Pastor at Zion Lutheran Church of Pittsfield, and the Protestant Chaplain at Amherst College. Anna is the founder and co-host of the Food and Faith Podcast, and the author of This is God’s Table: Finding Church Beyond the Walls. As a member of the Creation Care Leadership Circle, Anna is working to implement an Evangelism Grant from The Episcopal Church given to jump-start the Good News Garden movement in WMA.

She is passionate about being the church in our current time and context, matters of justice (especially around food, environment, poverty, housing and race), liturgy, and young adults. Anna is married to Dr. David Howlett.

WHAT ARE YOU
GRATEFUL FOR?
In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.
I WANT TO HELP
SHINE YOUR LIGHT

In this unpredictable time, your church continues to give thanks for and need your support. If you are capable of sending in your pledge, thank you. If you are unable to give at this time, we understand. If you are capable of giving a bit more so we can respond to the needs of our community, we are very grateful. If you are in need, please contact a member of the Vestry listed at the top of the newsletter. Since we are not gathering in person in community, we ask that you send your gifts via mail to Grace Church, P.O. Box 114, Great Barrington, MA 01230. We are truly all in this life together. We pray, trusting that God will see us through this season and beyond.

Thank you for giving generously to support the ministry of Grace.

CHANGE THE BABIES
It costs about $1500 a year to support a baby. The Diocese's goal is for one congregation
to support one child for a year.
To donate to support babies at the Mampong Babies Home in Ghana please send a check to Grace Church, PO Box 114, Great Barrington, MA 01230.

Weekly Reflection from the South Berkshire EFM Group

Our reflection was drawn into focus by listening to a short segment of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, the voice of the Centurion in Matthew 27: 54: “Wahrlich dieser ist Gottes
Sohn gewesen” (“Surely this man was the Son of God”). This link will take you into a beautiful recording beginning at Matthew 27:45: https://youtu.be/3k4Ph-H5ZO4?t=8211 The Education for Ministry Group’s discussion reminded several of us, who have been to the Vatican, of the relationship between Jesus and Mary depicted in Michelangelo’s Pietà. More about that famous sculpture, housed in St. Peter’s Basilica can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piet%C3%A0_(Michelangelo)

Here is the Collect we wrote in response to our discussion:
God, who seems so remote and yet is in us. We pray that you make yourself known to all and soften our hearts, so that we may live together in love. Amen

Six Week Series at 7 PM
Using the books “Sabbath as Resistance” by Walter Brueggemann as our primary study guide and “The Sabbath” by Abraham Joshua Heschel as a supplement, we hope to explore Sabbath beyond the ideas of simple legal prohibitions and discover together Sabbath’s potential to change the culture in which we live. How do we break our culture’s addiction with consumption and busyness? The Sabbath may just be the answer we’ve been looking for! How will this work? First purchase the book “Sabbath as Resistance” from your favorite independent book seller and read the first chapter. Then join us beginning March 2, 2021 at 7 p.m. for six weeks on Zoom. Rev. Erik Karas along with Rabbi Jodie Gordon will facilitate the discussion with congregants from Hevreh, Christ Trinity, Grace, and St. Paul’s. We are excited to have the chance to be with one another before Passover and Easter!
