   SPONSORSHIP DAY

On the third weekend in August -- this year, SATURDAY, AUGUST 18th -- OA celebrates SPONSORSHIP DAY.

SPONSORSHIP Q&A
Part I
Your Intergroup Officers & Reps
answer a few questions
about their sponsors!

What attracted you to your first or current sponsor?

- My current sponsor is my first sponsor. We met 9+ years ago. She had been in OA for 4 years and had been relieved of her sugar addiction.... I wanted what she had.
- The peace in her eyes, the faith in her words, and the arms of my Higher Power.
- Her spirituality and honest sharing.
- Excellent recovery. A noticeable change through personal experience in recovery.
- She had what I wanted and her solutions were to work the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions.
- Her recovery, her sense of humor, and her gentleness.
- Vibrant woman with excellent recovery who was confident enough to work with me as a male.
- Her recovery was a familiar story.
- Hearing her honest at a meeting.
- What I noticed first is she is a gentle soul. She has a great program and is very soft, gentle and loving.
- She works a disciplined program and demonstrates recovery through action, not just words. She is committed to weekly meeting and phone meetings, does service, reads the literature, still writes down her food after many, many years, does Step work, has God in her life, and has the physical recovery to match the inside recovery.

How did you ask your sponsor to sponsor you and what was that like for you?

- I asked her after one of the meetings we both attended hoping she didn't have too many sponsors.
I reached out and asked to meet this friend in person and asked in an awkward roundabout way.
- I had attended the 2008 Convention in Plymouth. I was looking for a sponsor and she was open to helping a newcomer.
- It was easy to ask her because my HP led me to her.
- I texted her and then we met to discuss how she sponsors.
- I decided to ask her and then obsessed for a month or two and finally asked her out loud at a meeting.
- I just asked her and it was very easy - she accepted immediately.
- I asked her in person - it was scary!
- I asked her outright. I had asked another person but decided it was not a good fit.
I had returned to OA after a long relapse. She asked me if I had a sponsor. When I said no she said she would be my sponsor. That made it easy.
- I asked her if we could talk first. Then, after talking to her a few times, I asked her if she would consider sponsoring me. I was scared to ask for what I wanted because I had never done it before.

What is one of the things your sponsor has taught you that you would like others to know?

- Be gentle with yourself and I'll probably want to write about it!
- She taught me that good self-care is my number one job!
- Love and compassion were her biggest tools.
- One day at a time. Forgiveness. OA is a program of action.
- A food plan is essential; so, I send her my food.
- Routines keep you on target. Start your day with Step 11 talking to your HP.
- To make progress, not perfection!
- One sponsors up to their level of experience and no one has to do it perfectly. The other thing she reminds me is that "this too shall pass."
- To pause, not to rush nor stop, but to wait for the signs to what I may need!
- That it is important to be nice and gentle to myself and important to put myself first.
- Have a plan of action and put it into action. Don't just say - do!

NEXT MONTH - Intergroup Reps share answer a few questions about being a sponsor.

of Overeaters Anonymous  SECOND EDITION
  $15

OA's keystone book-The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous, Second Edition is updated and improved, 28 years after is first publication.

Created specifically as a study of the OA Twelve Step recovery program, the OA Twelve and Twelve, Second Edition has been revised for clarity and inclusivity-with a restructured Step Four chapter to increase usefulness. Read how, through working the Twelve Steps and studying the Twelve Traditions, members have found "physical, emotional, and spiritual healing that we don't hesitate to call miraculous." Copyright 2018. Softcover; 180 pages; indexed.

"Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all."

Continuing the series, "The Importance of working all Twelve Steps," the leaders share their personal experiences as sponsor and sponsee in dealing with Step Eight. Emphasis is placed on the concept of making amends-changes-and not just saying I'm sorry. Also stressed is the importance of working with a sponsor, in order to determine if amends are needed, and if so what should be said or done. While Step Eight encourages forgiveness, it also requires the individual to focus on what his or her part was in the situation . . . to clear off their side of the street, regardless of how the amends are received. Both speakers stress the freedom and relief felt in making the list and becoming willing, without any thought or concern about the future steps. Individual sharing is excellent as members relate their own positive experiences, including the need to add one's own name to the list and then become willing to making amends to oneself.
