It's not too early to start thinking about summer internships!
Join us on Wednesday, November 11 from 7:00-7:45 pm on Zoom to learn how to apply for these paid internships and ask any questions you may have about the JCU Summer in the City Internship Program.
Hear from Summer 2020 interns about their experience:
-
Jordan Spradlin, Exercise Science and Psychology Major '22 will be speaking about her experience at Boys Hope Girls Hope
-
Matthew Loughran, Political Science and Peace, Justice, and Human Rights Major '21 will be speaking about his experience at Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services
-
Emel Terzioglu, Management and Human Resources Major '22 will be speaking about her experience at Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry
The JCU Summer in the City Internship Program provides an opportunity for students to engage the issues of homelessness, advocacy, service, solidarity, and social change through this internship. Nine paid internships will enable qualified students to explore the systems and structures behind many of the current social issues of our times. This ten-week, full-time, immersive experience will place students with a nonprofit community organization in Cleveland involved in advocacy work addressing these social issues. Students will use their internship experience to prepare a research project for the organization that promotes social change. Interns also receive a $3,500 stipend for their work. Internships are open to all sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduates and graduate students.

The fight for civil rights and freedom
Civil rights leader and longtime U.S. Congressman, John Lewis, spent his life fighting for freedom and justice for everyone. In this illuminating conversation with lawyer and activist Bryan Stevenson, Lewis discusses the essential importance of voting, shares encouraging words of wisdom for the generation of young people currently organizing in the struggle for racial justice and tells moving stories from his decades of making "good trouble" -- at the Freedom Rides, March on Washington and in the halls of Congress. "When you see something that's not right or fair or just, you have to say something," Lewis says. "You have to do something."

Our #MyMagisMessage for the week comes from CSSA Student Liaison, Shauna Glavin, a junior Exercise Science major from Rochester, NY! Shauna has served with Youthability Play Practice and St. Martin de Porres High School Tutoring.
If you had to state your life mission off the top of your head, in one sentence, what would it be?
To form intentional and meaningful relationships with those around me in order to foster community and create more positive experiences.
#MyMagisMessage
At this point in my life, intentional relationships are more important than ever. Currently, being a student, an athlete, a friend, a sister, and filling many other roles, it's easy to get lost in the chaos. Forming meaningful relationships with the people around me helps keep me grounded, and keeps me motivated. Finding people in my life who motivate me to fill these roles, and fill them well, has positively impacted me. When I do get lost in the chaos of midterms, of my competitive athletic season, or anything else that may be going on, I lean on those around me. I lean on them for support, for love, and for motivation. Finding time to cultivate these relationships is a priority.
Service with others through John Carroll has impacted who I am and motivated my life's path. It has motivated me to act on things that I am passionate about. To spend time with those around me and to create relationships with new people. It has motivated me to take time out of my day to spend intentional time with others. Whether it is spending an hour singing with the members through Youthability, or talking with a high school student through Zoom, service has reminded me of the power of intentionality.
