Our Featured Speakers:
Mark J. Smith, CFP®, CPA/PFS, CIMA®   & Drew Barnes, CFP®
Mark founded M.J. Smith & Associates in 1983 with one overarching goal: the genuine desire to help people. Over the years, that goal helped grow the firm from a one-person shop into a team of professionals dedicated to helping its four generations of clients achieve their financial hopes and dreams.
Growing up in Iowa, Mark watched his hardworking single mother search her apron pocket for quarters and nickels, putting away as much as she could to provide her children with the best education for a better life. Her children took her Midwestern work ethic and values to heart. Mark worked on his uncle’s farm from an early age, and he launched his own house painting business when he was 15.
After years of hard work, good grades, and scholarships, Mark graduated from the University of Iowa with an accounting degree, going on to earn his CPA designation and specialized in taxation.
After working for a number of years as a senior tax specialist at Deloitte, the international CPA firm, it didn’t take long for Mark to realize that what he really wanted to do was work with individuals proactively and help them chart a course for a successful financial future. He learned about, and earned, the globally recognized CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM designation and knew that with it, he could help change people’s lives.
Now, nearly four decades later, M. J. Smith & Associates is one of the nation’s leading financial planning and investment advisory firms, and Mark is recognized as one of the top financial advisors in America. He has been named as one of Barron’s top advisors every year for the past decade.
Drew earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University
of Colorado. In addition to working with families, he likes to work with
business owners, ensuring they’re structured as the proper entity, and that their personal financial planning is integrated with their tax and retirement savings plans.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS PROFESSION?
Coming out of college, I knew I’d be in finance, but I didn’t know exactly what I would be doing. I spent a few years at Great West Financial and saw people making mistakes with their retirement plans. I wanted to advise and help them, but I wasn’t legally allowed to do so. After learning more about financial planning, I knew I wanted to pursue the CFP® designation. It has allowed me to become a senior financial consultant and work one-on-one with clients.
WHAT DRIVES YOU PROFESSIONALLY?
Truly wanting to help people. After earning my CFP®, I feel obligated to share the knowledge with clients. It’s great to be able to say, “Ok, you can retire!” I’ve seen people break down in tears when they hear that news. Literally watching people achieve their goals and dreams drives me. Sometimes, the situation is somber, like a death or other life challenge. I help them walk through that next phase of life, reassuring them that we’ve planned for this.
The true joy comes from getting to know people and becoming friends beyond business acquaintances. It feels good to have people trust you, not only with their life savings, but also their children and grandchildren’s life savings. It says a lot about the firm Mark has built and the people who work here.
