A Note from the Executive Director
In the United States, demographers predict that as many as half of today’s 5-year-olds can expect to live to the age of 100. How cool is that! This fact came from the New Map of Life - a recently released report produced by the Stanford Center on Longevity. The report outlines the following principles that can lay the groundwork for a society that is healthier, more equitable, and longevity ready.

  1. Age Diversity is a Net Positive Never before in human history have so many generations been alive at the same time, creating opportunities for intergenerational connection that have until now been impossible.
  2. Invest in Future Centenarians to Deliver Big Returns “Aging society” narratives portray the later decades of life as a period marked by vulnerability and dependence.
  3. Align Health Spans to Life Spans While median life spans have increased dramatically over the past century, our health spans – defined as the years in which people are healthy, mobile, mentally sharp, and free of pain – have not kept pace.
  4. Prepare to Be Amazed by the Future of Aging Today’s 5-year-olds will benefit from an astonishing array of medical advances and emerging technologies that will make their experience of aging far different from that of today’s older adults.
  5. Work More Years with More Flexibility Over the course of 100-year lives, we can expect to work 60 years or more.
  6. Learn Throughout Life Given the strong links among education, health, and longevity
  7. Build Longevity-Ready Communities As a nation, we must start now to design and build neighborhoods that are longevity-ready.
  8. Life Transitions Are a Feature, Not a Bug While the conventional life course is a one-way road through prescripted stages, our new map features roads with forks, which take us in many directions through the roles, opportunities, and obligations that 100-year lives will bring.

At Senior Coastsiders, we are excited about the role we play in supporting people in our local community to live century long lives. As we plan for 2022 and beyond, I invite you to tell me what you think is most needed to support you or a loved one to live to be 100+. Is it an exercise class to promote physical health; a creative opportunity to boost mental stimulation; a group activity to facilitate social connections; a volunteer endeavor to enhance a sense of purpose and meaning; an intergenerational project to engage with others across the age spectrum; a skill building course to extend the working life; an advocacy activity to advance a cause or some other opportunity to engage in lifelong learning? Visit me in my office, call me on the phone (650) 726-9056, or email me at swinter@seniorcoastsiders.org. I’d love to hear from you.

The future is our story to write, and I hope that together we can make 2022 the best one yet.

Stay safe and healthy.

Kenneth Judd holding his silver medal trophy
During the championship, residents use Motitech’s video concept, Motiview, to cycle through a choice of 2,000 locations on stationary bikes via a video projection that plays while the person pedals (with hands or feet, depending on mobility).
In a society where aging is oftentimes equated with ill health and vulnerability, it is important to remember that societal preconceptions cannot define us, and each one of us can write our own story of aging. The world is full of people who had some of their finest moments only after they became seniors. We’ll be highlighting some of these Unstoppable Seniors in the months to come because their story is also a part of our story. Here is a story of US:

This month’s Unstoppable Senior, Kenneth Judd, hails from Southam, England where he lives at Galanos House, an assisted living facility dedicated to serving the Armed Forces community and their families. A pilot in World War Two, Kenneth has always been an avid exerciser and still likes to cycle and exercise in other ways. But what makes Kenneth an Unstoppable Senior is that he won a silver medal in the Road Worlds for Seniors competition by cycling 2,348 miles over 26 days at 99 years of age.

This wasn’t his first go, however, and he wanted to do better than his 7th place finish in 2020. So, he started practicing for the race in February, cycled until July, and took a month off before the championship. He also exercised two hours a day, often starting early in the morning. Once the championship started, he would often get up at 4:00am to get on a bike. “Fortunately, the staff finally understood that they could not serve me tea in the middle of the cycling session. I was so focused that I could not stop for tea!”

The Road Worlds for Seniors is a competition for older people and people with dementia which allows them to take part in a global sporting event, even though they may live in a long term care facility. Now in its fifth year participants cycle on stationary bikes made by Norwegian firm Motitech. The cycling machines are connected to a laptop or other computer, which in turn is linked to a TV or monitor. So when the user cycles they see themselves moving through the scenery on the screen. In 2021, 5000 cyclists and 260 teams took part in the competition from all over Europe, including Norway, Turkey, Canada, and Australia. Will Kenneth race again, next year? “Well, we'll see. It would have been fun to beat the "kid" who won!” referring to this year's world champion, 86-year-old Norman Cote.
