ROAR: Reminders
Head's Holiday, Parade Route, Exams & Celebrations
If you missed the Head of School's letter yesterday, be sure to check it out below. Aaron Schubach touches on several year-end details  following Gov. Jared Polis' announcement this week that all Colorado schools will remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. On May 1, we will celebrate our students with a cookie pickup, faculty wave along a parade route, senior honks of support, and auction items pickup.
e-Gala & Auction Celebrated Uncommon Moments of Togetherness
At one point, our Google Hangout video chat welcomed roughly 100 families to the the e-Gala & Auction on Saturday evening, and many more were online biding and giving. The early results of this incredible community effort indicate we surpassed even last year's budget-busting totals. So far, the "Raise Your Paddle" donations topped $90,000 and the Silent Auction has jumped to $47,000, resulting in $137,000 of generosity. Genuine giving was witnessed in every gift and every purchase. Thank you for inviting us into your living rooms and for showing the strength of this community!

In case you missed the program and want to watch the recorded video, check it out below. This 15-minute video captures inspiring messages and highlights our teachers, students, and families - and even those in our community on the frontlines of this global pandemic.

Faces of CSS: Melissa O'Rear
What is your role at CSS? I am the Creative Dramatics teacher for Kindergarten through 5th grade and the Middle School Drama Teacher.

What did you want to be growing up? When I was growing up, I wanted to be three things. An olympic swimmer, an opera singer and an astronaut. Although I didn't accomplish any of these titles, I believe I have the spirit of all three. When it comes to sports I can be pretty competitive. I love training for half marathons and playing sports. I am a classically trained singer, and I originally went to college for opera performance. I grew up singing in choirs and taking voice lessons, and I currently sing with the Colorado Springs Chorale. A love for music is still a big part of my life. I can't say too much about being an astronaut, except for that I love adventure and imagination. Being a theatre teacher definitely sparks both of those interests on a daily basis.

What draws you to teaching? What draws me to teaching is the challenge to create an environment where students are able to explore their individual creative potential. I am constantly trying to find ways to build a classroom where students are not afraid to be vulnerable and to take creative risks, ultimately being more confident in their artistic choices. Drama, by nature, is collaborative, instinctual and is an exploration of our environment. I love to see students working together, following their instincts, and making discoveries about themselves and the world around them.

What is one thing you enjoy about CSS? Something I love about CSS is the people. I've never been around a group of teachers that work so hard to build the best learning environment for their students. Everyone cares so deeply about each student. I also love the diversity of experiences that students are able to accomplish throughout their education at CSS. From experiential education to the arts, students have an array of educational opportunities to prepare them for the world.

What is your role at CSS?  I am the administrative assistant for the Children's School. From my desk in the Early Childhood Center, I try to make sure everyone has what they need to get their jobs done.

If you were a superhero, what powers would you have? I would want my super power to be the ability to move things with my mind.

What is one thing you enjoy about CSS? One thing I enjoy about CSS is I get to spend my day with the best kids on the planet. They brighten my day with their enthusiasm, energy, joy, and giggles.

What draws you to working with children? I am drawn to working with kids because it's always an adventure. Every day brings new rewards and new challenges. The kids are excited to take on the day, and it's contagious. (And they don't think my dinosaur obsession is weird.)
CHSAA Closes Spring Sports Season
From CHSAA:  We have proceeded with cautious optimism, holding on to a thread of hope that the spring season would be able to realistically resume, knowing that the health and safety of our sports communities would dictate our course of action. It was our hope to be able to create the memories because we understood what it meant to our high school communities - especially seniors - statewide.  Click here to read the full announcement.

Also related to sports, the CSS Booster Club's Cornhole Tournament & Fundraiser, which was scheduled for Saturday, May 2, has been postponed. A new date has not yet been set.

Adopt a CSS Senior Facebook Group
Amy Kunstle P'17, P'21, launched a parent-driven initiative for our CSS community known as "Adopt a Senior." It is a closed Facebook group modeled after similar groups and is dedicated to showering the Class of 2020 seniors with encouragement and care packages during this time of shared loss. We wanted everyone to know about this heartfelt and authentic opportunity to connect. We invite the CSS community to "adopt" a senior to show support. Perhaps your kindergarten student is buddies with a senior. Anyone can adopt a senior! The strength of our community is showing up in so many beautiful ways, and this is yet another shining example of what it means to be #KodiakStrong!
