Last week marked the end of National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time for recognizing the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture and achievements of the United States.

As you may already know, UC Davis is an emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). While we are nearly there, the work to reach HSI status does not end with achieving a number.

Wildlife biologist Justine Smith examines the ways that humans in Patagonia change large mammal behavior and relationships to other species.

Spotlight: Your Public Scholarship Community
On October 21, Public Scholarship and Engagement welcomed its third cohort to the Public Scholarship Faculty Fellows program. The six fellows will pursue projects on health equity, municipal reparations for racism and understanding how parents talk to their children, among other topics.

About 180 fellows from UC Davis are serving with about 60 organizations in the region this academic year. The paid opportunities make experiential learning accessible to all students.

Piri Ackerman-Barger, associate dean for the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, was featured on the RN-Mentor podcast. She discussed her work in education for workforce diversity, health and education equity and institutional sustainability. Ackerman-Barger is a 2022-23 Public Scholarship Faculty Fellow.

Dr. Naomi Hauser’s research was featured in a WIRED story on infections carried by wildfire smoke. Dr. Hauser was a Public Scholarship Faculty Fellow in 2021-22.

Professor Ermias Kebreab, associate dean of global engagement and director of the World Food Center, has found that feeding dairy cows seaweed will reduce methane emissions.

The Public Scholars for the Future program integrates community-centered theories, methods and techniques into the practice of the next generation of public scholars. This is an interdisciplinary cohort-based program open to Ph.D. students in any UC Davis college or school who plan to register for in-person instruction in the 2023 winter quarter. Applications are due by November 21.

CUMU members are invited to submit proposals for this unique opportunity to advance scholarship through a collaborative relationship with an industry leader and national association. The fellow will receive an award of $5,000 to pursue the identified research question(s).
