AAKP's Pediatric Kidney Pals - April 2020
It's National Pediatric Transplant Week, part of National Donate Life Month.
This week is  National Pediatric Transplant Week !

Taking place at the end of National Donate Life Month, the main goal is to raise awareness  and ultimately end the pediatric transplant waiting list  by encouraging people to register as organ, eye and tissue donors.

With over 60% of the U.S adult population registered as donors, there are still currently over 1,900 children under the age of 18 on the transplant waiting list. The majority of those age 6-17 are waiting for a kidney transplant. Read more about pediatric donation and transplantation.

Book Review: Howl Inspires Mr. YNOTT

AAKP Board of Director and Ambassador, Jim Myers wrote this book review on Howl Inspires Mr. YNOTTby Brenda E. Cortez, Illustrated by Dindo Contento

This is another great children's book about our friend Howl the Owl (Help Others With Love) and this time he's helping out a true Kidney Hero, Edward "YNOTT" Drake, of The YNOTT? FOUNDATION.

Howl is looking forward to high school football camp. He loves the school, but even more than that, he wants to see his favorite player, Mr. YNOTT. Mr YNOTT misses the first day of camp, and on the second day tells Howl that his college football career might be in jeopardy due to his illness. Mr. YNOTT is understandably concerned, but Howl convinces him he can handle this. Mr. YNOTT says, "YNOTT me!"

Brenda Cortez has written yet another brilliant children's book that is both  entertaining and  uplifting. The unique thing about her books is that the two I have read are based on  real people with real illnesses. This book is no exception.

PATIENT SPOTLIGHT:
Our Top Pick of Inspiring Stories about Young Patients

Three year-old Maya Freedman celebrated her birthday  My Little Pony style with the help of Jewish Charity, Camp Simcha.

Maya was diagnosed with atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome, an extremely rare kidney condition, and has been in and out of hospitals for the past six months.

With the current state of the world, Maya was not able to have a traditional third birthday party, but with the help of those at Camp Simcha and modern technology, she was able to celebrate remotely, through the Zoom platform. Her mom, Laura even added, "These are not easy times for anyone, but I think we all felt uplifted to know that these joyful times are still possible."
