Senior Spotlight: Alan Burns
An Article by Staff Member Michelle Wheeler
|
|
Alan Burns came to Sanborn as a sophomore. He is quiet and studious- but will crack the occasional smile when the situation calls for it. Alan joined the soccer team and started bulking up on science and math credits, because Alan has a plan.
Doc Young explains it perfectly, “Alan is taking a double-lump of tough STEM classes with me during his senior year, Honors Physics and AP Calculus. (If only there was AP Soccer?...) He has been working to keep up and catch up, all while answering some challenging questions and correcting my math when necessary. Getting into medical school is quite challenging, and Alan has been answering that challenge in my two classes. He might never use calculus to stitch a patient back together, or header an infected tonsil away, but the act of learning all those skills will move him forward in college and career.”
Before Alan becomes a physician, he intends on serving his country in the National Guard. Lessons learned on the soccer field will be invaluable to his future endeavors. Coach Sprackland notes, “Alan was a great player to have on the team and an even better teammate. He always brought a positive, fun attitude everyday and always lifted the spirits of the players and coaches. Alan was always looking to improve as a player, asking questions and helping his teammates which was great to see as it showed his dedication and commitment to his team and himself.” Thanks for being a team-player Alan, now and in the future.

Senior Spotlight: Kylee Caswell
An Article by Staff Member Kerry Grella
|
|
I think it's safe to say that there isn’t a teacher in this building who doesn’t know Ms. Kylee Caswell. Her larger than life personality makes her so lovable and memorable to us. Here are what a few of her teachers had to say about Ms. Caswell:
Aaron Cass:
“Kylee is multidimensional. She's an artist, a kind friend, mature beyond her years, and occasionally a pain in the butt. You've got bravado, kid, and I hope you find great ways to use it after Sanborn. Good luck!”
Bob Dawson:
“Kylee is a young woman of tremendous passion. You never have to wonder what she is thinking, it's right there in the open. Underlying that, always, is a huge heart that cares deeply about people. She is a defender of those who don't necessarily fit in, or have the resources to live up to the silly expectations we put on teenagers. Over the last four years, she has developed life and career goals and aspirations that she will likely exceed as nothing will get in her way.”
Mr. K (aka Kylee’s “School Dad”)
“Kylee...
I wanted to send something but I just can't put it into words…”
Jillian Swist:
“Kylee Caswell's radiant personality bubbles out of her with such presence and life that it is utterly strange and noticeable when she is not in school. From Kylee's freshman through junior year I saw her about 100 times a day everyday, to the point that anytime I think about Sanborn Kylee comes to mind too. Kylee and I have joked about the sheer number of times I've called her out during an art class demo that I tend to automatically holler her name, even if she isn't the prime distraction culprit. Even though the incredibly shocking stories Kylee loves to share consume the attention of the entire class, Kylee's creative spunk and paintings are equally as inspiring and captivating in our classroom. Kylee, I will so miss your laugh, your nearly operatic song like salutations, and your incredible sense of humor. You have a wonderful and resilient heart and I can't wait to hear about your whimsical adventures through life.”
Kerry Grella:
“I have so many favorite memories of Kylee and I would never be able to choose one that sticks out in my mind. She is such a wonderful human being, full of spunk, life and passion. I hope that light she has in her always burns bright and fierce. I will miss all of our chats so much. Kylee- you BETTER COME BACK TO VISIT!!!”
There is not enough space here for us to truly convey how we all feel about the legendary Ms. Caswell, but the last words I’ll leave are- you will be missed terribly.

Senior Spotlight: Madison Larcome
An Article by Staff Member Meghan Petruzzi
|
|
It’s not often that someone who is so passionate about music and art is equally as passionate about science. Many see the areas of focus as being so different, yet Madison Larcome is one who sees similarities. Madison is able to find a creativity in the sciences that mimics the art, yet with science she can find answers so her pragmatic brain appreciates the solution based ideas found within science.
Madison has performed well in science over her high school career because she has a passion for understanding how the universe works at a variety of levels and across multiple fields of science. Madison has taken college courses during both her junior and senior years while participating in sports and maintaining a job. She has always loved looking past the surface of things and examining the smaller details, and science has always been her favorite subject. Following these passions, Madison took 3 science classes as a junior and has plans to further her education in a biotechnology field.
Madison would be one of the first to tell you that her work and athletics have taught her the importance of responsibility and time management. Madison is an athlete who loves all sports, including field hockey, basketball, track, and softball. Madison’s favorite sport has been softball from the age of six, and is now one of the captains of the team. Softball has taught Madison many skills, and she appreciates the opportunity to lead. Beyond Madison’s academic and athletic pursuits, she is dedicated to helping solve mental health issues in her community. Madison has been an active member of Life of a Student, participating in a mental health subcommittee throughout high school. She also plays an integral role in SoRock advocating for mental health issues. Madison’s club involvement stems from her enjoyment in getting to know different kinds of people and learning new things.
Madison balances the stress of school and work with a variety of interests which include guitar, longboarding, painting and raising reptiles. Her favorite artistic medium is paint because it's very versatile, while guitar playing is a way to express how she is feeling. She is very enthusiastic about her reptiles because of their easy-going nature. She currently owns a bearded dragon (Melon), and a leopard gecko (Peach).
Mrs. McCarthy says “I have truly appreciated the opportunity to work with Madison for the last four years, and she is someone who I know can be relied upon, is loyal, and sets expectations high for herself with plans to achieve those goals. The future's so bright for her given her drive and determination!”
After graduation, Madison will be furthering her education at Salem State University majoring in biology and hoping to achieve her goal of becoming a lab technician in Boston.

Senior Spotlight: Emily McLellan
An Article by Staff Member Liz Mulvey
|
|
Emily McLellan is one of a kind! My memories of her go back to her freshman year where she tagged along with her older sister to a few NHS meetings, needing a ride home afterward. Then I had the pleasure of having her in Anatomy class last year!
As a sophomore, she joined the ASL club, where she got to work with Mrs. Babcock. Emily went on to NECCO her junior year to take ASL classes!
Mrs. Babcock shares: “I truly can't say enough awesome things about Emily McLellan. From her shy, silly freshman self to the poised, mature young adult, she continues to impress me. She keeps so many balls in the air, but never once complains and never misses an opportunity to chat whenever I see her. When a lot of other students would have given up she presses on and maintains a positive outlook. She deserves the best and I can't wait to see the amazing things she'll do in the future.”
Mrs. Boisvert shares: “I miss seeing Emily McLellan every day. She was a member of one of the most spirited sophomore classes I have ever had. She is funny, snarky, kind, and compassionate; all of the characteristics I love in a person. I will remember fondly the instagram sessions, hallway greetings, and the dystopian lake from our classes. I wish you the best after high school Emily!”
To know Emily is to understand her values. She wants nothing more than to help heal the broken parts of a community by helping those who are less fortunate. Foster care reform, prison release reform, drug addicts, etc. This is where Emily wants to focus her efforts as she studies social work at UNH. Her interest in social work was cemented when she began volunteering at a rescue barn for horses in Brentwood. Helping the horses heal was helping the people heal. Throughout her life, she has learned that everybody has a story and no one person's story is less important than anyone else's. I am so proud of Emily for the young lady she has grown into, having known her for the last few years. Congratulations, Emily!

Senior Spotlight: Jake Martinelli
An Article by Staff Member Connie Carson
|
|
If there is one thing I can count on early each day, it would be seeing Jake Martinelli hiking the halls of Sanborn, not only to log this activity for Fitness class to keep Mr. White happy, but also to warmly greet (often with a bit of sarcasm to those he knows well) people he sees as he gets his day underway. Jake is always ready to help a peer in need or find a solution to help a friend with a problem, putting his own needs aside to help others. He is kind, friendly, and considerate of others. Jake is helpful, reliable, and has positively touched many in our Sanborn community with his gentle nature and calm demeanor. He also has a skill set emerging in welding that is really going to take him places. People who know welding are really beginning to see this too. I’ve known Jake for four years and feel so very fortunate for having the opportunity to get to know him, and I’m definitely not alone in my positive impressions of just who he really is. Here are some things that other teachers, and the staff at SST, had to say about Jake. Mr. Kelly said “Ready smile, quick with a sarcastic quip, always moving. These are things I will remember about Jake Martinelli. I have worked with Jake over 3 years and it has been a pleasure to see him grow and gain confidence in his abilities. Jake has made some really neat projects and I have been happy to work with him on them. We made a pair of gauntlets for a set of armor he is building. Recently he helped another student make a shield. (do you sense a theme here?). The best thing about Jake is that he's a really nice kid. I will miss him next year, but he is primed for success.”
Mrs. Healey was quick to note Jake’s natural affinity for greeting others as well. “Jake is an interesting, humorous, and compassionate student who goes out of his way to make sure everyone gets a "Hello! how you doin'?'' throughout the day. Jake has a special interest in welding and has developed some seriously awesome creations throughout his time here at Sanborn. He definitely has a talent that will carry over into the workforce if he chooses. I will miss seeing Jake on his daily "Hello!" walks and I wish him the very best in his future endeavors.
Heather Wheeler, like Mr. Kelly and myself, also had an appreciation for Jake’s unique sense of humor. “I feel very grateful to have had the chance to get to know Jake while he was a student at Sanborn. Jake has a wonderful sense of humor and an unflappable determination. I will miss seeing him in the halls every day. Best wishes, Jake!” Like many in our Sanborn community, Mr. White was also positively impacted by this young man, and had this to say: “Getting to know Jake this year has been great; we spent most of every remote class talking about all sorts of different topics. We chatted about sports, camping, school and politics. I quickly learned that Jake is a kind, compassionate, and sometimes opinionated young man. Now, when we see each other in the halls, we always try to make time to catch up, I learned recently that Jake has been tracking his steps during school and was getting close to 20,000 steps during a single school day. I wish him all the best and look forward to seeing all that he accomplishes!”
Stacey Hayes at SST added this: “Jake was one of the first students that I met at SST. Taking on a new role in the crux of a global pandemic was intimidating. I had spent the majority of my teaching career in middle school. Would covid 19 protocols keep me from connecting with high school students in meaningful ways? Enter Jake Martinelli...he was friendly, engaging, and personable. These early interactions helped me embrace the new position and gave me hope for a future in support services. Jake had a few hurdles to overcome with the resignation of a beloved welding teacher. Transitioning from Mr. T, an interim substitute, and then a new teacher was not easy. He is absolutely thriving now and one of our most enthusiastic welders. I know that he will be successful in the welding industry because of this passion and resilience. Best of luck to Jake in his future endeavors.”
Mrs. Harbel remembers Jake from freshman year and had these words to say of his growth, quite literally: “Jake is someone that I always enjoy running into in the hallway. Since freshman year, every time I see him he is ready with a hello and a smile. I have enjoyed watching him grow as a person (both in the literal sense of his height and his character!).
Just as these teachers and many others take notice of Jake and his kindness, his developing skills as a hands on welder, and his positive energy, I can also attest to this young man’s quick wit and often sarcastic sense of humor, his friendly greetings; always with a smile or even a bow, and his desire to make other people happy. I look forward to seeing Jake take the stage to collect that diploma he has worked so hard to earn and graduate with his peers, and finally enter into the real world which he has made it clear he is really looking forward to. While he is so very ready to move on with his life and gets this next phase started, many here at Sanborn and at SST will miss these daily interactions. I can’t wait to see what amazing things he does after high school.

Senior Spotlight: George Cromwell
An Article by Staff Member Denise Alenskis

I have known George for three years. George is always friendly, polite, and a great conversationist. He always has a story to tell and most of his stories will put a smile on your face. George is respected by both staff and his peers. He is always the first to volunteer when someone needs help! When George reflects on his high school career, the highlight of his time here at Sanborn has been his Forensic Science class and Math “was ok”. George says he will always remember that his closest, best friends are those that he has met here at SRHS! George attended the Building Construction program at the Seacoast School of Technology during his Junior year and is interested in attending a trade school or an apprenticeship program for electrician. Currently, George is working part-time at Hannaford’s Grocery Store. He is looking forward to saving enough money to buy his own vehicle so that he can get to and from trade school and work.
Outside of school, George enjoys making and playing music, playing video games, hanging out and playing basketball with friends.
Other staff members had the following to add about George:
Mrs. StJean:
George is such an easygoing person who tells the best stories! I've known him since freshman year and have seen him grow so much. He's a delight to have in class, always on board to learn and try something new. I'll never forget when he was a freshman and suggested I name my unborn baby Sarah Jessica Parker! George, with his humor and charisma, will definitely be missed!
Mrs. Carson:
George is the epitome of a kind soul. He is one of the most caring young men I have had the opportunity to work with. His gentle nature and kindness is felt by those around him. He always greets with a smile and will stand and protect anyone who he feels may be vulnerable. He is a good problem solver. I can't wait to see what fantastic things he accomplishes when he graduates!
Mrs. Jones:
George is a very hard worker. A student who is very detail oriented, if unsure he always checks in to make sure he fully understands. George is well liked by students and staff. His happy personality is a joy to be around. Good luck in the future!
Mr. K:
You mean the only student whose birthday we celebrate everyday?!
Mrs. Healey:
George has a fantastic presence and he's always up for a conversation related to just about any topic! George is one of the most polite and caring students I have ever known in my 13 years of teaching and he is a friend to all. I know that he will find success in any field where he can use his charm and wit.
Best of Luck George! We will miss you!

Senior Spotlight: Michael Rosa
An Article by Staff Member Michelle Farrar

I have had the pleasure of knowing Michael since he was in 5th grade as his former school counselor. Michael has always been kind, bright and hard working. Michael has the ability to accomplish anything he puts his heart into. It’s hard to believe he is a senior, setting off to Great Bay Community College to study Business. Aspiring to one day be employed in a corporation or even for the government working as a business contractor. Throughout his high school career, you could see Michael on the football field, playing for the high school team. His devotion to his family is like no other. Michael is well liked and respected by the staff as you can see...
“I always tell my freshmen that high school is where you find yourself and though Michael might deny it- he has completely transformed from his freshman year! He went from avoiding eye contact when I asked the class a question to role playing as Vice President Mike Pence in our mock election last fall. Not only that, but he's also taken on a leadership role in the school store- you can thank him for the spiffy new bucket hats sported around the halls! I am so proud of Michael and cannot wait to see what life after Sanborn has in store for him!” Ms. Lombardo
“Mikey is most definitely a student that I will never forget. Getting to know him over the past 4 years has been nothing short of memorable. In the classroom, Michael's suave and approachable personality make it very easy to carry a conversation with him. Being Michael's football and basketball coach, I was able to meet another side of Mikey as well; the competitive, outgoing, confident side. When Michael stepped onto the football field, he became a fierce competitor who was not shy to make a tackle, he also had a few interceptions during his football career here at Sanborn as well. I will miss seeing Mikey walking through the hallways in his new "J's" but know that he will continue to be successful in whatever he plans to do.” Mr. White
“Michael is a genuinely thoughtful person. He is intuitive and kind, and recognizes the value of doing the right thing. When I had him as a freshman he was mostly quiet and reserved, but he has really come into his own over the past few years. Ms. Fenderson and I love when he comes to the library because he is always so polite and makes great conversation. I can't wait to see what comes next for him!” Ms. Ryan
Michael, you will be missed, but we wish you all the best!

Holocaust Speaker Series - Rita Goldberg
|
|
lease join us as we host Rita Goldberg, a child of a Holocaust survivor. She will be speaking to our classes via zoom on Monday, May 3rd, from 10-11:30. Please email Ashley Harbel at aharbel@sau17.net if you would like to register. The zoom link will be emailed to participants prior to the session.
Biography
Rita Goldberg, is a professor of Comparative Literature , daughter of Holocaust survivor Hilde Jacobsthal and author of “Motherland; Growing Up with the Holocaust” (The New Press),a second Generation memoir of the Holocaust. While Goldberg was born in 1949 — four years after World War II ended — her mother's history was always part of her life. Her family was connected to a Dutch family often identified with the Holocaust. Otto Frank, father of young diarist and concentration camp victim Anne Frank, was Rita Goldberg's godfather. But what Goldberg knew from her youngest days was of her mother's young, brave life in frightening, tumultuous times. Hilde Jacobsthal Goldberg not only survived World War II and the Holocaust. She did it, as her daughter says, heroically. As a teenager, Jacobsthal worked to save other Dutch Jews from concentration camps. Then she risked her life helping anti-Nazi Resistance efforts. She eluded arrest through courage, luck and the help of others.
