LGBTQ Leaders in Higher Education announces its first virtual leadership institute for June 17–19, 2021, as the United States celebrates Pride Month. Panels focus on topics such as a forthcoming book LGBTQ Leadership in Higher Education, leadership through and beyond the twin pandemics of COVID-19 and the racial divide, and leadership of trans* people. Special guests outside of higher education include U.S. Congressman Ritchie Torres (NY-15) and Gerri Cannon (NH State-18), one of nine trans* members of state assemblies in the United States.
The institute opens at 1:45 p.m. EDT June 17 with a presidential track for LGBTQ Presidents in Higher Education members, including a program, Unlearning & Relearning: Engaging Across Difference and the Reality of White Fragility, led by Gonzaga University vice provost of student affairs Kent Porterfield. A board meeting and virtual social time follow.
The leadership institute’s main program resumes at 11:15 a.m. EDT June 18 with a panel based on the forthcoming book LGBTQ Leadership in Higher Education, followed by a panel exploring how to plan for disruption beyond COVID-19, and then a track for LGBTQ Leaders in Higher Education: individualized mentoring sessions organized by institute host William Paterson University.
The institute resumes at 10:45 a.m. EDT June 19 with a panel exploring LGBTQ leadership through the twin pandemics of COVID-19 and racism, a panel featuring trans* in higher education in the United States and Canada, and a conversation with U.S. Representative Ritchie Torres.
LGBTQ Leaders may announce other sessions in the weeks to come.
