MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Maya Mancuso
President, BABC
Northern California

US Business Relationships Manager

Dear Members and Friends of the BABC Northern California,

As we approach the Thanksgiving season, it is an apt time to reflect on all we have to be grateful for, and to cherish time spent with family, friends and our communities. In my role as President of the BABC Northern California, I’d like to express my gratitude to all of our members, our Board of Directors and our staff for being an active part of this organization and helping the BABC thrive as we celebrate our 68th anniversary. You are all valued members of this community.

Since our last newsletter, the BABC has been preparing for an action-packed fall and the annual BABC Christmas lunch.

From across the pond, I’d like to share an update from BAB Network on recommendations for deeper transatlantic economic collaboration: A Small Business Work Plan: Recommendations for a Transatlantic US-UK SME Agenda.

The BABC came together with the French American Chamber of Commerce and the German American Business Association for the Fall European Networking Evening on September 15th. These seasonal events are a great opportunity to gather with other international chambers, and we hope you can join for the next one! Many thanks to Werqwise for hosting us.

On September 27th, our Board of Directors gathered at the beautiful new San Francisco offices of law firm Cooley for our Board meeting, with stunning views overlooking the bay. Thanks to Julie Wicklund for hosting our Board as we plan a rewarding year ahead for our members.

September 28th was our first Top Tier Member Reception for the year, kindly hosted by Tammy Sandhu MBE, Deputy British Consul General, and her team at the Department for International Trade. Over 50 guests joined us at the Consul General’s Residence for a great opportunity to mix and mingle and hear Tammy share some important updates from the UK Government. We thank Kiki Stannard, Adam Dunnett, Lindsey McGee and Team ZEDRA for sponsoring and making this event possible. Check out the photos here.

October 3rd saw the return of our BABC “NextGen” Happy Hour generously hosted by Wingtip in their elegant wine cave. Many thanks to Tricia Boezio, Rebecca Murphy, Aislin O’Connor, Alyssa Lammers and the NextGen Committee for organizing and promoting the event. It’s great to see this group back in action. Those under 30 can join the BABC today at the “NextGen” rate of $100 per year and have access to networking and professional development opportunities. Furthermore, Wingtip has offered BABC members a discount of 20% off the initiation fee to join their exclusive club.

In partnership with Premier Member Squire Patton Boggs, the BABC was delighted to host a virtual breakfast seminar on October 12th for HR and privacy professionals. For those interested, you can download the video and presentation materials here: Navigating Cross-border Challenges Relating to HR Data Protection and Employee Right to Work Compliance.

We have a lot of upcoming events as well. On October 27th, we will host our quarterly Marin Happy Hour at the Junction Beer Garden. This is free to attend, and please do register.

Our flagship Global Words of Wisdom event is back on November 2nd from 5:30 – 7:30pm at Werqwise in San Francisco. We have an expert line-up of speakers from Tint.io, Distillery and Discreet Labs discussing “The Law of Attraction and Rethinking Corporate Culture”, moderated by Brieanne Runsten at our Premier Member ZEDRA. Come along to hear from this panel of international expansion pros and enjoy networking over food and drinks.

On November 9th, Patron Member Cooley and Premier Member Vistra host a breakfast webinar on The International Talent Conundrum: Understanding the Pitfalls of Expanding/Hiring Overseas and How to Avoid Them. This will be an informative session for executives, hiring managers, and HR professionals. It is complimentary to attend so please sign up or feel free to share with your networks.

And finally, it’s almost time for the last – and best – event of the year! The BABC’s 59th Annual Christmas Luncheon Fundraiser will be held at the iconic Fairmont Hotel on Friday, December 9th. It is energizing to hear from our members about how excited they are to be attending this favorite annual event in person. We are now 70% sold out with less than 7 weeks to go so if you are planning to attend, I’d encourage you to sign up quickly to get the best seat possible and avoid disappointment. We are working on some fabulous Raffle and Auction Items and will once again support Raphael House with proceeds of one Auction Item going directly to the charity at the forefront of providing family-centered solutions and brighter futures to homeless and low-income families in the San Francisco Bay Area. You too can support Raphael House by making a donationproviding essentials for their shelter, or by signing up to “Adopt-A-Family” by providing gifts and spreading holiday cheer.

Wishing you and yours a joyous Thanksgiving season.

With gratitude,

Maya Mancuso

LETTER FROM THE BRITISH CONSUL GENERAL

Joe White, MBE
Tech Envoy to the US & British Consul General San Francisco

Dear BABC Members,

I want to begin by thanking so many of you for the generous and heart-warming support that the BABC community provided after the death of Her late Majesty The Queen. At a time of profound grief, it was inspiring to see so many of us come together to pay tribute to the United Kingdom’s greatest servant and finest diplomat. Whether through signing the condolence books, sharing warm memories, or attending the evensong service at Grace Cathedral, BABC members provided invaluable support in ensuring that Northern California honoured the memory and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II. We now move forward together in enduring support for His Majesty, King Charles III and with a renewed sense of commitment.

With the Prime Minister’s new cabinet in place, the Consulate team is preparing for a busy autumn of ministerial visits and other engagements. New policies are being announced each week and as we emerge from the mourning period, we expect parliamentary business to return to normal and for the business of government to continue at speed. Later this month, the Parliamentary Health and Social Care Committee, chaired by the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt, MP, will be visiting the Bay Area to explore digital transformation in healthcare. The committee will be meeting with healthcare technology companies and touring high-performing hospitals in the region. Other visits will be occurring throughout our consular region, including Portland and Seattle, including the COP President Alok Sharma, and we fully anticipate remaining busy as we move towards the end of the year.

Finally, I want to close by highlighting our recent BABC Top Tier members reception which we were honoured to host at the Residence. While I was unfortunately unable to attend, Deputy Consul General Tammy Sandhu was a fantastic host, and I am glad that many you were able to visit the Residence (some for the first time!), meet members of both our Department for International Trade team and wider Consulate team and network with one another. To echo Tammy’s remarks on the night, we are extraordinarily grateful for the role that BABC plays as our force multiplier, flying the flag of transatlantic business every single day.

We look forward to our ongoing partnership.

Joe White MBE

Tech Envoy to the US & British Consul General San Francisco

BREAKFAST WEBINAR WITH COOLEY AND VISTRA

Operating as a global company is at the forefront of business now more than ever. With remote workforces spanning the globe, bespoke solutions requiring in-country support, and up-and-coming markets forming in previously neglected regions, companies need an international expansion plan as part of their playbook.

Expanding for the first time can seem daunting and untangling a patchwork expansion plan gets costly and confusing. International workforce expansion can be an exciting time for your workforce, if you have the right tools in place to avoid potential legal liability.

Join Andrew Laing, our Moderator and Sales Director at Vistra with panelists, Charles Zamora, Global People Advisory Officer at Vistra, Selin Akkan, and Eileen Leman, Employment Law Associates from Cooley LLP, as we discuss the issues that companies face when hiring in a new jurisdiction.

After the event, you will:

  • Know how to leverage global hiring solutions to hire the best talent possible, and to manage compliance, employee satisfaction, and integration from afar;
  • Better understand the signs that it’s time to expand and learn how to take advantage of these opportunities so you can keep ahead of the curve;
  • Be equipped with the tools you need to engage your first employee in a new country, or to send your local employees overseas to establish a new presence;
  • Better understand the potential legal pitfalls of hiring in a new jurisdiction without first considering the types of employment or engagement that best fit your needs;
  • Recognize what permanent establishment is and how to navigate it efficiently across all of your international operations.

Our thanks to Cooley and Vistra for sponsoring/moderating this event!

REMEMBERING CAROLE ANNE OBLEY, RAPHAEL HOUSE CHAIR EMERITUS

It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Carole Obley at her home on Thursday, October 13th, 2022.

Many of you will have known Carole as a warm, kind, caring and deeply connected supporter of both the BABC and of our Charity Partner, Raphael House, serving on their board for 11 years, as interim executive director and as an official advisor. For the BABC Northern California, Carole was always so generous with her time – keeping us connected to business opportunities for the organization and for our community and members. She brought both Raphael House to us as an important charity to support more than 15 years ago, and additionally, Bank of the West as a now long-standing member and supporter of the organization.

Carole was also well connected in the San Francisco philanthropic community and provided countless hours of service for the betterment of the community. Her British charm, wit and genuineness will be sorely missed by many.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends for their loss.

With deepest sympathy,

Jo Healey,

BABCSF Executive Director

Adopt-A-Family matches our generous community members with families at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness so that families can enjoy a holiday season full of warmth and joy.

This year, we ask donors to kindly provide gift cards instead of physical gifts to allow our families the opportunity to purchase exactly the gifts they and their children want and need.

ALASKA AIRLINES ANNOUNCES MILEAGE PLAN SIGN-UP PROMO

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: BIRD & BIRD

BABC Executive Director, Jo Healey, sat down with new BABC President and Bird & Bird Business Relationship Manager, Maya Mancuso, to get the scoop on what their membership in our chapter means to them.

Tell me about your company and the services it provides to help those doing business in the Transatlantic Corridor.

Bird & Bird is an international law firm with a focus on helping organizations being changed by technology and the digital world. Our San Francisco representative office provides US businesses with a full suite of legal services and advice related to matters in the UK, Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa, including international expansion and investments outside the US, intellectual property, disputes, data privacy, venture capital transactions, cross-border M&A, HR issues, complex restructuring and transformational projects and coordinated multi-jurisdictional services.

How is your company unique from others in the same sector?

Bird & Bird is unique in many ways!  We have a team on the ground here in San Francisco but don’t practice US law which means we can collaborate with local US firms and support their clients on all their international legal needs beyond the US. Reciprocally, we work closely with US law firms when our international clients need US legal advice for transactions in the US.

We have a broader geographic reach than many other international law firms with representative offices in the Bay Area. We have offices in 31 key business centres across the UK, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa and the US.

The way we are structured also makes us different. We have a ‘one firm’ culture and are organized as a single partnership, rather than a franchise or other model with separate profit centres. This means the work is always done by the right lawyers in the right locations. With one profit pool, our lawyers are incentivized to work well together and we’re very good collaborators across jurisdictions...
