U.S. - Canada border restrictions on non-essential travel have been extended until May 21. The Bellingham Herald reported: "During the first two weeks of April the two Blaine crossings saw just over 2,000 passenger vehicle entries into the U.S.; typically there are 155,000 to 160,000 passenger vehicles during the same time frame."
Alaska Ferry sailings to Bellingham have been delayed until at least mid-May.

Dual-citizen family surprises Surrey dad
with cross-border birthday bash
The family of 13 - separated by a ditch bordering two countries - sang the grandfather a birthday song. In Aldergrove, BC, his son, daughter, and their families, celebrated Sanghera's arrival with cheering and balloons. In Lynden, WA, Aulakh and her family, as well as Hardeep's fiancée, held up a massive "Happy B-Day" sign stretching two car-lengths.

During these times of physical distancing, it is important that our community works to remain socially connected. The events calendar can now serve as a hub for Whatcom County businesses, restaurants, stores and other organizations to share their online activities, events and specials.

The Washington Tourism Alliance
(WTA) announced the appointment of David Blandford as its Interim Executive Director, effective May 4, 2020. Blandford will lead the organization's marketing activities in addition to a growing range of initiatives related to COVID-19, including tourism industry recovery and crisis communications.

From the chef of The Willows Inn in Washington, which was named the best restaurant in North America three years in a row by Opinionated About Dining, comes Lummi: Island Cooking.
An alum of Danish restaurant Noma, chef Blaine Wetzel is known for his Pacific Northwest cuisine. In the cookbook, the chef shares recipes for his green figs and leaf cream; sea urchin marinated in tomato seeds; wild beach peas and lovage stems and stew of chanterelle mushrooms.

The Whatcom Literacy Council will be hosting the 24th Annual TRIVIA BEE & Silent Auction 6 p.m. to 9 pm on Friday, November 14th, 2020 at Bellingham Technical College's Settlemyer Hall in Campus Center.

Bellingham Mayor Seth Fleetwood announced a number of City-hosted summer events and programs are canceled, as part of county-wide efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
From festivals and triathlons to full-day summer camps and sports leagues, City-hosted events that encourage people to gather are canceled in Bellingham this summer.
Mayor Fleetwood's announcement follows Whatcom County Health Department Director Erika Lautenbach's recommendation last week to cancel summer events throughout Whatcom County.

Singers from a great variety of
Whatcom County choirs will be featured in a virtual performance of "Bright Morning Stars," a stirring Appalachian folk hymn. The film will be posted on YouTube in mid-May, where it can be enjoyed by viewers across the county, the nation and the world.

Northwest Clean Air Agency (NWCAA) awarded
Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) with a
'Partners for Clean Air' Gold Award for 2019.
In order to qualify for a Gold Award, an agency must demonstrate at least three consecutive years of perfect compliance with air quality regulations. Agencies must also employ additional clean air practices in at least two of four categories. These are: energy efficiency, emissions reductions, air pollution prevention, and transportation.
